Why would we trade for a guy right now?

Best reason would be if it is a long-term team building move. That's why I focused on Canzone. Canzone would have 6 years of control. I don't like most of the MLBTR suggested trade targets because they all look too short-term. However, if you can get a potential long term piece who is interesting enough, then I'd be open to dealing a shorter term asset.

I don't view Thomas as a long term asset. 2 years of control means he'd have to be extended to be around here as a piece for the contention window, which will be after his age 30 season. In my thinking, it's more a question of when is the best time to move him. There are 4 periods in which he's movable - offseason this year and next, mid-season this year and next. Canzone is fair value now, is a bit blocked in Seattle, and Seattle has a need for a righty platoon corner outfielder. Seems like a good time to strike a deal. We could even get a second guy were we to kick in some $$. If you think Thomas's value goes up in the later trading periods, or you are ready to cut a deal now to buy out a couple of FA years for cheap, then you don't do it.

I was just looking at the August schedule. They have 18 home games and 9 road games. The three road series are against the Orioles, almost home, Philly, just up the road, and Braves, closest team south. That's when they'll make their move out of the cellar.

Canzone is already 26. It has taken him a long time to get near the majors. https://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=canzon000dom

Thomas is a good starter. Maybe he would not have started for the Nats 2019 team, but he hits for some power, plays a good RF, has a strong arm, runs the bases.

Yea, I don't think the Nats should be trading for any short term help. If they go short term, just pay someone in FA.

Too streaky. His average over the last 3 months of the season was approx  .243. I’m not sure where everyone is getting their man-crush for Thomas. He is filler until someone arrives.

What was his OBP and slugging during that time period?

Overall he was 3.1 bWAR which is good. Not superstar but good.  His OPS+ was 114 which followed a 108 season.  Good defensively with a very good arm. I think people have a crush on him because he is the teams best all around everyday player right now.

           OBP.            BAbip
July      .283.             .316

Aug.     .310.              .304

Sep.      .243.              .197

I forgot he really fell off in Sept. BA was less than .200

Well that’s not slugging so not sure how his power was the end of the season.

From those BABIP numbers looks like he just had some tough luck in September.

Anyway I think you have to look at the full season.  Almost everyone has ups and downs over six months. Is there any reason to think pitchers suddenly figured him out after the all star break?

Canzone is probably more of a platoon bat.

Its a small sample size, but his expected stats were better than his actual performance. I'd definitely be willing to talk about Canzone and another piece, like Adcock or Berroa.

I just dont think the Mariners do. At least not until the deadline. And if Thomas has another monster first half, then his price should go up.

Just based on a couple of articles sounds like his OF defense is suspect also.

I was pegging him at first base or DH anyway.

I see Truck Day for the Red Sox this year is February 5th. I can see Truck Day for the Nationals for a lot of years in the past. I can't find Truck Day for the Nationals this year.

with Thomas agreeing to a 1 year, $5.45 million contract, that leaves Luis Garcia, Harvey, and Finnegan as the remaining arb eligible guys who have yet to agree to terms.

It's a fairly big deal in Boston. It's the day they load the truck with all the needed spring training equipment and head out from Boston to Ft. Myers Florida.

Thinking about Truck Day in Boston reminded me of the movie "Fever Pitch" when the day came the sheets of tickets for the whole season were delivered by the mailman.

I assume tickets no longer come like that. I guess you get them on your phone? Seems more fun to get the sheets of tickets.

Garcia going to arbitration would be hilarious. Like dude, you suck and your GM and manager called you fat.

so tempted to cut the guy if he wins.

By the way, Michael Busch (and Yency Almonte, RP) from the Dodgers was traded to the Cubs for low minor leaguers. We had talked about Busch when talking about Garcia alternatives.

Low level, but high ceiling. Little surprised he didnt garner more. Jackson Ferris was someone I was hoping we could get at the deadline for Harvey or Rainey.

One of the kids going to the Dodgers is from Chesapeake. High schooler from last draft. $400k 11th round. Sounds a bit like Michael Taylor- fast, power cf with contact issues
