Corbin's big change since 2018-19 is he doesn't strike guys out. From 10+ k/9 to around 6. Velo is the same, gb and bb rates the same. Maybe if he shifts to relief, he gets a velocity boost, but he needs something to make people miss his strikes and to offer at his sliders outside the strike zone

Imma guess hitters are now laying off the slider and he can't throw it for strikes.

Nats give Lewin Diaz a non-roster invite to ST.

As the article says, quantity over quality in the 1B try out. I would guess Smith might even get a shot if he can't hook on elsewhere. It'd need to be a minor league contract with a spring invite.

I'd actually like to see Drew Millas get a real look at catcher, which pushes Keibert to DH, Joey to 1B, and Riley Adams as a backup.  If Keibert's defense continues to be like it was last year, there's no way he can get as much time behind the plate, .

TBH, i'd like Millas to learn a second position, like second base. I like him, but I don't see them pulling the rug out from under Ruiz at catcher. If he can just field at a bit below average, I think his bat plays above average for a catcher, but I don't think his bat plays well enough at 1st or that he should lock up DH with that bat.

sure, but he has to hit a lot better to be a guy we keep around for another 5 years or even 3.

Then dont keep him around that long. But that still not enough of a reason to not play him in 2024

Alternatively, Adams at DH or 1B with Milas as backup could work.

he's not a long term piece. At best, he has to hit well enough to be tradeable this year or next while he's pre-arb.
TBH, IDK if either Millas or Adams is a keeper piece. Ruiz is by virtue of his contract.

I’ve been an advocate of since probably July. I just could not bear to watch Smith with RISP.

Golden discussing the way the 1st base fits together:

Quote
The Nationals designated Dominic Smith for assignment in November, hoping to find an offensive upgrade after the first baseman struggled to hit for power until the final month of the season. They could still turn to Joey Meneses, who played sparingly at first last year after a breakout 2022 season. At MLB’s winter meetings this month, Manager Dave Martinez said Meneses had been limited by a knee injury in 2023 but he expected him to play first more in the coming year. Meneses is 31 years old, though, and Martinez has stressed the importance of keeping him off his feet. Martinez said the Nationals would explore all avenues to find someone else to play first base.

Earlier this offseason, Washington signed Juan Yepez to a minor league deal. Yepez has the positional versatility to play first base or outfield. And he has shown flashes of power, hitting 12 home runs in 76 games during his rookie season in 2022. Díaz is a strong defender who could enter in late-game situations for Meneses if needed, but he projects as a depth piece with Class AAA Rochester until he can show that he can hit at the big league level.

Signing both Yepez and Díaz gives the Nationals some depth behind Meneses, but the moves won’t fix Washington’s need for more power bats.

I'm a little more hopeful for a bounceback by Meneses or Yepez

MLB.com had an article "One holiday gift for every MLB fanbase. This is what they said for the Nationals:"

"Nationals: CJ Abrams to emerge as a star
The Soto trade didn’t end up turning out the way the Padres hoped it would, but all told, it hasn’t been perfect for the Nats, either. Abrams is as close as this team has a future star, and you’d like to see him making more moves in that direction this year. The .734 OPS he had after the All-Star break -- not to mention the 33 steals in 35 attempts -- is hopefully a sign of what is to come."

I don't think it's fair to say "but all told, it hasn’t been perfect for the Nats, either." We don't know yet. They seem to be ignoring Wood and the other young guys we don't know about yet. It could just be a poor choice of words in the article as no trade with that many players is going to be perfect.

Abrams is as close to a future star as the Nats have? Well, if you only look at the active roster that will play on Game 1, that might be true, especially if you assume Dylan Crews does not start the year in the majors. If the Nats fans really were wishing for something on Christmas, it would be that James Wood is able to make enough contact to hit his high end projections. That's the guy with the biggest star capacity. It's going to take more than a .734 OPS for Abrams to be  much to talk about. Not to denigrate Abrams - the pop is a nice surprise, and even without being an OBP star, he's able to get on enough to be a huge PITA to opponents. My wish for him is a .320 OBP. That's probably not good enough to be a good leadoff hitter but would be a step forward.

Seems to be a click bait from ESPN.  Crews would be the guy you want to be break out.  Or Wood. But I guess they mean this season MLB?  Whatever. They have some decent writers but always coming up with these lists and rankings is tedious.
