Another homer last night.
That’s a good sign. Team needs taters.

Via nationals player development:
Quote
Yohandy Morales reached base three times last night, going 2-for-4 with a double and a walk. Morales now has hits in 3 straight games and has reached base safely in 4 straight games.

Absent that injury, he might be in the majors right now.

If he can demonstrate some power, he is the internal option I think at 1B.

I need to take a trip down the road to Bowie this week to see what he's all about.

no power in this streak.

I think he's a prime candidate for the AFL. Figure he'll have about 75 games played this year by the end of Harrisburg's season, counting his rehab. HE needs to face more game pitching.

Except Occam’s Razor says the reason he’s hitting .455 is because he’s hitting the ball hard a lot.

I saw him (again) on Sunday in Bowie.  He DHed.  Two hits, both singles.  One a liner that skipped off the back of the mound, and the other a blooper off his fists that he powered over the 2B's head.

Having seen him in person at a couple levels now, here's where we are: dude is strong and generally hits the ball very hard. He'll hit to all fields, but his power will be between the gaps.  Think a Zimmerman or Michael Morse build type and Zimmerman's swing shape, but...why isn't he hitting the ball in the air?  I'm asking that as a legitimate question, because it doesn't seem to align with his swing.  He had a thumb injury, so maybe there's something in the swing plane when the bat's actually in motion, but I haven't been able to spot it live.

Short story is that he can hit.  He can get the barrel on the ball and has the strength to get hits even when he doesn't.  He should hit.  If he doesn't get the ball in the air, he's wasting his size, and he's a big guy.

Then there's the defense.  The Nats now have 3 prospect-ish guys in the upper minors who are 3B-ish.  I'd prefer Morales to Wallace, because Morales has a better bat and looks like he does have the feet, arm, and athleticism to play 3B...just not as well as House.  At 1B, well, he better effing hit, and I don't know if he will do it enough to be more than an average MLB 1B.

The projection here is somewhere between Michael Morse and Ryan Zimmerman if he lifts the ball, and AAAA if he doesn't.  So, uh, next year is kinda important.

Nah; much taller, longer arms, much better athlete.  A lighter-on-his-feet Morse is probably the closest Nats physical comp.

But . . . Morse came up as a shortstop.

:lmao:

Mariners had Adam Jones, Michael Morse, and Yuniesky Betancourt come up as shortstops at the same time. Guess which one they kept? I think there might have been a 4th, too.

Saw him play short when the Mariners came to town in 2005.

I was thinking more of the hitting profile rather than appearance .

I think it's TBD.  Right now he's a line drive hitter with no lift, which is a bit of a mystery given that he didn't have that problem in college in the ACC.  I assume it's a remnant of his thumb injury that caused him to miss a lot of time this year, but it matters a lot for how he turns out.

The good news is over his last month, he had an OPS north of .800. The bad news is he didn't have a single homer in his final 25 games.

With the deadline trades stocking up the Nationals in the corner infield, I was thinking Yohandy Morales made sense as a trade chip if the Nationals wanted to go for it next year. But I almost feel like we'd be selling low on him. If he comes back with a high average and OBP and finds even some power, he may be a pretty good prospect here.
