Keith Law has Ruiz listed as his breakout star for the Nats in 2023.
I think that he can be more selective with his contact skills. Until he gets to 2 strikes, the dude doesn't have to swing at anything that is not middle middle.  Should boost his power.

OF Stone Garrett and Jose Ferrer P optioned to Triple-A Rochester. Alex Call is the 4th OF.

INF Leonel Valera sent to Minor League camp.

Jeter Downs, Matt Adams, and Michael Chavis are all battling for the last bench spot. There are several names for the final four bullpen spots including Anthony Banda, Alex Colome, Paolo Espino, Hobie Harris, Andres Machado, Wily Peralta, Mason Thompson, and Thaddeus Ward.

Dougherty this AM suggested that, after the 4 locks (Finnegan, Harvey, Edwards, and Ramirez), that Ward is near certain and a lefty (seems to be Banda) is likely, so in his view there 2 slots tbd with the Ferrer cut. Article is excerpted in the Bullpen thread. https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2023/03/21/washington-nationals-hobie-harris/

I could maybe see not adding Banda to the roster. Machado would need to be added and they love his velocity. Beyond that, I think they like Thompson, but they really want multi-inning relievers.  I don't think Colome has shown enough and they could end up risking losing him. For roster reasons and team control, it might be good to put Harris on the 40 man roster and break with him because he has 3 options.

1:05 PM start (30 minutes ago) vs the Yankees. No TV or radio so this game technically doesn't exist. But this is likely the opening day starting lineup:

1. Lane Thomas (R) RF
2. Dominic Smith (L) 1B
3. Joey Meneses (R) LF
4. Corey Dickerson (L) DH
5. Jeimer Candelario (S) 3B
6. Luis Garcia (L) 2B
7. Keibert Ruiz (S) C
8. CJ Abrams (L) SS
9. Victor Robles (R) CF

Meanwhile, our O has been shut down for 2 innings on 9 pitches. That even includes a K.

Edit - didn't gameday not keep proper track of number of pitches last Spring?

Nats having some fun so far with the Yankees. Now up 3-0 after Ruiz doubled in Garcia who had singled.

Gore up to 4IP, 1H, 1BB, 7Ks, 0ER

If Gore and Corbin have good days and bad ones, then that's a massive improvement over all bad, all the time.

As long as the good days are  some of the ones they pitch, of course.

Gore through 6, the pitch count only showed him at 40 with 2 outs in the 5th.

2H, 1BB, 8Ks, 0ER.  Gotta think he's done now.

This was against most of the Yankees starters (though no Judge)

Dominic Smith puts some cheese on a Tyler Danish pitch for a 2R HR. Nats lead 5-1 as the subs come in.
