Feels like such a stupidly draconian system.  5% is bupkis.  Might as well just have preset, non-negotiable values for every pick that get automatically assigned, if there's going to be such a small amount of wiggle room.

not so fast. We absolutely blew through slot to sign the #3 pick. $2.6 MM bonus vs $1 MM slot. It's just you have to pick and choose who to splurge on vs who to economize on. We went cheap ## 6-10 to do that and to splurge on Morales, too.  I think that, had Sykora at #3 not signed, a lot of that money would have been spent on the kid who is going to Texas that we took at #19. Ironically, Crews most likely will not benefit from the money saved on ##6-10.

The pro side for what you are saying is that the Nats may have gotten lesser talents at ##6-10 under this system than had they been required to offer slot to these picks. That said, anything beyond the first 3 or 4 rounds is spotty for talent, and the seniors we signed may actually have some talent along with their little leverage. I'll be tracking Dugas because I love the pop and hope he can handle second defensively.

The Brown terms. Saved 114,000 here as well.

so, as best as I can guess, there was about $9.4 million left below the draft pick penalty before this signing, and Brown is signed for $350K. That leaves around $9.1 million for Crews.

My commentary was more general than a gripe about the Nats' specific situation this year.

That's exactly what I don't like about it, though.

It's just a way to punish/stifle teams that could otherwise go all-out with their draft strategy.  I'd rather teams be able to pick the best available player with any given pick, without having to worry about some budgeting process.

I get that it was designed to promote competitive balance by preventing big market teams from going too far over slot, but it seems like it's serving the exact teams it was intended to thwart.  Teams like the Dodgers, Yankees, Red Sox, and Mets get to take advantage of an absolute absurd, broken free agent market.  If that's going to persist, then mid market teams like the Nats should be able to invest more in the draft (yes, the DC area is a large media market but the MASN deal and years of Bawlmer poaching away the DC fanbase effectively makes the Nats a mid market team).

In the meantime, if they are going to insist on these limits, at least make it a little more than 5%.  That's nothing.

Nats have a deal in place to give Crews 9.1 million. That should put them just under the threshold for forfeiture of a draft pick, as long as all picks after the 10th round sign for 150k or less

And they only drafted a couple of high school or junior college kids after the 4th round, best I remember from a quick scan of their picks. Those two have already said they plan to go to college. Nats seem in good shape. Especially if Crews has already agreed to a deal. We can cheer for this "A+" draft and hope.

Langford is at high-a and is crushing it. 1.235 OPS in 22 abs.

He’s a complete stud. I would’ve been ecstatic with a Langford selection (Crews and Langford were 1-2 for me the entire season). I still preferred Crews in the end because of the longer track record, more certainty in terms of the hit tool and the dynamic personality/star presence, but there’s no denying that Langford is a tooled up stud with excellent power potential. Texas got a REALLY good one.

Skenes made his FCL debut yesterday. Threw 1 perfect inning: 11 pitches,  7 of which topped 100mph, only 1K though.

Bust. Over/under in his FIRST TJ surgery?  June 2024?

Langford has figured out the Cactus league - 3 homers in the last two games: Now batting .353 with an OPS of 1.332

Rangers already looked tough; add him and potentially Jordan Montgomery on a short deal, might be looking at repeat territory

Thank you, again, DCsOwn, for working through all the draft lists and evaluations of the top possible picks.

This year, the prediction experts have the Nats taking a high school SS or Trey Yesavage, a college pitcher.

Of course he's still figuring things out but he hasn't hit one over the fence yet. I would of thought he would of run into a fastball by now.
