Draw seems a fair result. If USA cannot beat Iran they would get embarrassed in the next stage anyway.
The 'problem' (if we can call it that) is that Berhalter had clearly prepared the side for a much sterner test than they got - but that then signalled, to the Global Powerhouse, that they could essentially coast through the game; that the Stars And Stripes might contain, but would be unlikely to score unless they got a fortunate break. And so it proved - Maguire
et al had control of the 18 yard box all night. That allowed a 'point will do ' approach to prevail - the priority, for the GP, was not to
lose the game, and all but ensure qualification. Tournament play, I'm afraid...
If there is a criticism to be made, of Berhalter, it was his seeming unwillingness to change tactics once it became blatantly obvious that the GP were backing off. I can understand that the US fans were loving it, and the GP's approach made Team USA look better than they actually are, but stifling the opposition (even when they're letting you do it) isn't enough. Similar to Canada, the other evening - competent at the back, well set up and effective in midfield, not very good in the final third. Berhalter's doing a great job, but it's still a 'work-in progress' - better things to come. I'd like to see the S&S get through - your next opponents are eminently beatable.
So it's Great Satan v Axis Of Evil. Sounds like the next Marvel blockbuster...
