how's this for irony - Peoria will have prospects from both the Nats and the Padres.

gotta say it . . .

We'll see how it plays in Peoria.

I like the idea of sending Hassell.  He's right at the right level - a month or so in AA.

I'll be curious whether Antuna gets much playing time.

The guy I am happiest to see get this look is Frizzell. He can clearly mash A-ball pitching, he's 23, let's see what he can do against real competition. I hope him and Hassell do well and then start next year in AA with a chance to move up quickly.

It will also be really interesting to see Baker in this competition, he has hit at every level and can't be ignored much longer if he keeps hitting .300.

I hope Knowles and Cate are coming out of the pen because that's where I hope to see them both next year and in the future of their theoretical pro career.

Hassell and Baker are just right for AFL.

But Antuna? might this be Antuna's last chance?

AFL will use 2023 MLB rules - pitch clock and shift/pick-off restrictions, etc.

Hassell was 0-3 with a SF last night, Antuna: 0-3 with a walk and 2 LOB, Millas 0-4 and 3 LOB. Antuna also had a throwing error.

For those of you interested in following the Nats in the AFL, NationalsProspects.com is posting a recap each morning of the previous day's game. Here's the one for yesterday:

https://nationalsprospects.com/2022/10/afl-update-oct-4-2022/

Quote
Three Nationals were in the starting lineup and one came out of the bullpen.

Robert Hassell played right field and batted third but went 0-for-3 with a walk and a sacrifice fly. He had two putouts and fielded two hits.

Yasel Antuna was in the other corner OF slot and walked once in four plate appearances. He committed an error on the first ball he fielded and caught the second for an out.

Drew Millas caught the game and had eight putouts (all on strikeouts), no assists, and there were no steal attempts by the Desert Dogs.

Lucas Knowles came on in the 7th inning as the third man out of the Peoria ‘pen and set the side down in order on 15 pitches (10 for strikes).

Yasel Antuna and Robert Hassell manned left and center in the Javelinas outfield as the only two Washington Nationals in the lineup.

Antuna batted ninth and reached base four times with a single, double, and two walks while driving in a run and cutting down a runner at second base.

Hassell batted third and went 1-for-3 with a strikeout. On defense, he had one putout and fielded two singles.

Interesting that the Javelinas pretty consistently have Hassell in a heart of the order position.

I'm going to guess Hassell has an invite to ST with a very real opportunity to make the team next year.  He struggled a bit early at AA, but in September posted .293 / .379 / .397

I don't think he'd be any worse than Alex Call next year.

Or poor Victor Robles. Of course, I wish Hassell could get more time at AA and then AAA. Maybe Call in CF, Thomas in RF, and a hitter to be acquired in LF. Robles the utility OF, late inning defender.

A .780 OPS as your hot streak in your AA debut doesn't scream being ready for MLB yet to me. I don't think there's any reason to rush his debut. Let him start the year at AA again and and maintain that OPS over a full season. If he does better than that (.800+) call him up to AAA half way through the year.

Edit: Also highly depends on how he does in the AFL.
