To recap:

55 PA in 14 games (same number of PAs as in spring training, though obviously against a different caliber of competition).

.224/.278/.286 for a .563 OPS. 1 HR, 4 RBI, 4 SB. The HR was the sole extra base hit, hence the low slugging average.
Not world on fire, but not unexpected. His D made him a better call up than Alu. I'm OK with starting his options and service clock. He's shown enough that he's at least a multi-position defensive bench guy. This team has one this year in Vargas, but that's Lipscomb's floor.

I like Lipscomb better than Baker as the future utility role guy. As JCA mentioned Baker needs to start playing more than just 2B/LF to stick as a utility guy, preferably a position on the left side of the infield. Lipscomb has already shown he can do that.

Lipscomb showed he can field a ball at third but his throws were an adventure.

Yeah I've read he doesn't have the arm strength to really be a good 3B. But that's still more than Baker has done.

Rotate him at positions each week. Try him at shortstop

Lol, why? Not gonna fix his bat.

If anything, he should play shortstop

He's back in DC and they've cleared 3rd base for him to play every day.

What is Trey Lipcomb now? He is slashing a not bad .288/.346/.398 in AAA, he has started at every IF position, he won defensive awards in 2023, and he has some pedigree from a monster final season at Tennessee where I think he should have beat Dylan Crews for SEC Player of the Year.

He had a rough age 23 start to a major league season. That shouldn't be the end of him. But now I think his 40 man spot may be in jeopardy. They bumped Darren Baker over him, Jose Tena is now in the majors and can move around the IF, Abrams/Garcia are here to stay, and I guess Nasim Nunez is a thing.

Everything other than a less than 200 bat performance Major League debut is good. But it feels like he is done for this franchise. Or am I missing that Baker got the call up because they wanted Lipscomb to keep getting every day at bats?

they had to make a judgment on Baker because he will needed to be on the long roster or exposed to rule 5. I don't think Lipscomb's spot is in jeopardy at all. For one thing, Tena and Baker are lefties, and Nunez needs some time in the minors after this year. Maybe they re-sign Vargas, but Lip is a righty utility guy candidate for next year, and if he doesn't break on the active roster, he's righty depth with 2 more options.

He played some at Tennessee and has played some there in the minors. Worked there in Spring camp this year.

Seems to fall under the Vargas model of you can use him there as injury cover but ideally you don't want him there starting, even if the bat picks up.
