Our top prospect is 7-for-12 (.583) with a double, triple, home run, six RBI, one stolen base and three runs scored in his last three games.

Green also has about 380 fewer minor league ABs

Makes sense. Wood is one draft year ahead. They are both babies.

2 for 4 and a walk. OPS up to .997. Keep it going.

I've been a James Wood fan since I heard about this 6-7 athlete. I went to the Blue Rocks game tonight. He went 1-3 with a walk to end the night hitting .393. I know I'm going to take a whooping on here for this but I was disappointed. He took a lot of fastballs for strikes. His bat speed didn't look great. There was a blooping fly down the right field line when he was playing right and it looked like he was loping after it without great speed. That goes against everything I've read so I'm sure I'm wrong but when he gets to higher levels where everybody is throwing 98 I hope he can catch up to the pitches.

Discussion of Wood, Green and some others.

Have others watched Wood’s actual at bats?  Not just highlights that is. Just after watching a few his swing seems too long. Which is not surprising I guess for a big guy. He seems unable to pull a fastball even when ahead in the count. Because he is so big he will no doubt drive balls far the other way and up the middle but would be nice to see him able pull the ball. Made me wonder if either of these folks on the podcast have actually watched his at bats. Easy to fall in love with highlights. Jan Vesely syndrome I would call it.

I have and I agree. I dont give a damn about any prospect below Double A. Wood is so lanky that everything seems long and he doesnt have elite bat speed like Cruz does.

Also, Locked On Nationals kinda sucks now. The guy is a fan and works for WJFK, but the quality has gone down. For prospect podcasts, I'd look at Just Baseball's The Call Up. They're going through their Top 100 right now. They watch as much as they can, both in person and on TV, and one of the co-hosts in a minor league broadcaster. They get a little hyped on toolsy prospects, but they're also pretty honest about flaws.

As far as Wood goes, I'm just not willing to even think about doing anything with him until the ASB. The K rate is already creeping up past 25%. And we havent seen a corresponding increase in power. Its early as heck, but if this trend continues through May, I think everyone may need to re-adjust their expectations. Double A is gonna be a huge shock to this guy and I would expect him to need 350+ PAs at least at that level.

At one point when they started talking about Green, the woman said it’s not like Wood who has already proven himself. I had to laugh.  Let’s hope he can improve the swing.

Yea, I listened. No idea what she was talking about. Wood hitnwell at Low A, but struck out 28% of the time. Its a big, loopy swing.

I said earlier that I went to see him a couple of weeks ago expecting to be impressed. At the time he was hitting .393 but I said I didn't like his swing. His bat speed didn't seem to be adequate. He's hitting .277 now. I hope I'm wrong.

Wood has struck out 19 times in 67 plate appearances. 28 percent K rate.  Not great but better than Green.  Not a lot of power. Just one HR.  I think he will need the whole season in A ball. And hopefully Double A next year.  No rush.

He looks pretty lanky to me. With the Adam Dunn comparisons I was anticipating him to be a bit heftier haha. Though I suppose Dunn probably didn't fill out until later.

Reminds me of Aaron Judge, and when the Yankees brought up Judge and "experts" sneered that Judge was too tall to play, I always thought of Frank Howard. Did James Wood play power-forward in high school?

How about Dominic Brown!  He had a good month and made an all star game.

Poor Wood. If he does not dominate in A ball the same experts who pumped him up will be lowering expectations. And they are never wrong!

Let the kid progress at his pace and don’t worry about comps. The height is no issue other than maybe the long swing.  Saying someone cannot play OF because too tall is just dumb.
