When should Wood be called up?

immediately. Drop deadwood. Enough with the invented reasons. It's time.

Late May to midJune. Give him more at bats against lhp & decrease Ks, raise average.

Commentary about Wood’s defense from Law (who attended tonight’s game I believe). If this is accurate, Wood is an Elly level prospect. A unicorn at a premium defensive position with an incredible offensive ceiling.

from the linked article:
Quote
In Harrisburg, Wood will join Hassell and maybe get some clarity on where he’ll fit defensively at the highest levels. At 6-foot-6, Wood is a strong but unconventional center fielder, meaning he could slide to a corner while Hassell — who’s more often projected to stick in center — takes the spot. With the Blue Rocks, Wood made 28 starts in center, seven in right and seven as the team’s designated hitter to keep his bat in the lineup.

Throughout spring training, Nationals officials predicted Wood could quickly climb their system because of his feel for the strike zone. And while he struck out a good bit with Wilmington — 49 times in 42 contests — that was at least partly due to his selective plate approach. Wood’s rise up the rankings has been fueled by him carefully, painstakingly picking which pitches to hit.

is there a different injury profile for cf than rf or lf?

centerfield has much more running, but perhaps less risk of hitting a wall. he's big guy, and i guess there's belief that the running wears down big guys. from the reporting, i guess what is meant by "unconventional" is that he glides so fast when he runs that he looks like he's dogging and not covering the space he actually covers.

if he's that super-athletic, it almost seems like a waste in a corner. i especially worry about rf in nats park, which i think is a tough field to play well with the message board, it's mesh cover, narrow foul territory, etc...

i don't think you move woods out of cf if he handles it as well or better than hassell. i know the greedy would hope to have both guys make it as above average regulars with the nats, but i'd be happy with hassell being pushed to a corner and being a good defensive lf with leadoff skills (Eaton-like upside).

It’s not out of the realm of possibilities that Woods and Hassell debut this year. Rizzo has always been aggressive in moving players up (look at Garcia and Abrams as well).

tbh, i don't want to see him up for a 2 month or less stint.  i don't want to burn time on a 4th / 5th place divisional finish. i will be annoyed if we trade a year of control in 2030 for a taste of the majors in 2023.  i don't want him up until next may at the earliest.

Yep. And I would be shocked if Wood does well enough to earn a call up before next summer. I expect his big, looping swing is going to get exposed in Double A.

No reason to rush him. Shouldn't even be 40-man entering next Spring.

Only 18 PAs, but yeah let's pump the brakes a bit on calling him up so soon until he's at least raking in AA.

Edit: Curses, beaten by six seconds.

your post is much better :)

tbh, the real news of his  season is how he dominated in A+. so much so  he had to be promoted after 2 months.

100%. No reason to feel anything other than good about Wood's performance this season so far. If he's still struggling in AA in a month then it might be worth revisiting, but even then that would just confirm he's not ready to be called up yet rather than a reason to be concerned.

Obviously a lot of season left. Of guys still considered prospects, I'd assume Eury Perez, Jordan Walker, and possibly Elly De La Cruz graduate.

I'd expect Chourio, Holliday, Mayer, and Wood to be the top 4 on most lists. At the rate he's going, Holliday will be the consensus #1. Mayer is an SS and Chourio a year younger than Wood at AA, so I'd think that gives them an edge in slotting.

So I'd say top 5, maybe as high as #2 on an individual list.

I wouldnt rush him either but there's obviously a benefit to him being up day one and the shot at an extra draft pick. Have to weigh that vs the extra year of control vs the possibility of losing both if he comes up in May and still finishes 1 or 2 in ROY voting.
