which means he's basically useless with the 3 batter rule. More or less, he can only be used when facing a lefty that the other team will not pinch hit for, like Bruce Hyper / Kyle SWALBR of Philly or Freddie Freeman of Atlanta (or not).

Adon, the current iteration of Corbin, Machado, Clay, "Francisco Perez," Arano, Weems, Voth, and probably a few others I've mercifully forgotten.

Joan Jett, yes, but Rivers would be disallowed based on the fact that no non-organic substances can touch the ball.
IT  may be time for Rizzo to give some guys walking papers for because he doesn't like their aura, like he did to Steve Shields, I think, at the start of his time with organization.  Work fast, throw strikes, trust your D, even if it includes Soto, Garcia, and Thomas.   Seems to be working for a few of them.

I honestly like Arano,

We need an earlier trade deadline. Edwards and Cishek would bring something back from Philly. Tampa would trade for Arano.

Where the hell is Clippard? He can't be any worse than Perez , Clay except he throws with the wrong hand.

Looks like things have stabilized in the bullpen now that Voth has gone, Arano is on the IL, and there is a 13 man limit on the pitching staff.

There's a primary 5 - Rainey, Edwards, Finnegan, Cishek, and Erasmo - that are higher leverage, tied, and close trailing middle inning guys.

Then there is a shuffle / shuttle of guys with options in the 6-8 slots that are used to mop up innings in blow outs, pitch early when the starters don't go deep, and are otherwise used when behind.  Right now, that's Claytus, Machado, and Reed Garrett on the active roster, and Abbott, Weems, and Perez in Rochester.  All of these guys are more or less on the roster because they have options and can take punishment.  Perez and Claytus are interchangeable lefties, while Abbott, Weems, Garrett, and Machado are righties.  I guess Machado is slightly ahead of Abbott, Weems, and Garrett in terms of leverage.

Garrett went to VMI and was born in Henrico - not sure if it was the fashionable west end.  It looks like he's been used less because of the lack of starters being lifted early.  Garrett and Weems (and Machado) seem to be guys who have been flushed out of other organizations who are being given shots here.  I think they are placeholders for Hunter Harvey, Mason Thompson, and Hunter Harvey.

It's pretty apparent what is up with that.  They are using the bottom 3 spots in for guys with options who they can abuse, more or less, and see if they have anything.  They are scrounging for pieces. They know exactly what they have in Clippard.  He's a top 5 bullpen piece who will be up when one or all of Rainey / Finnegan / Cishek / Edwards / Erasmo are dealt.

Seems reasonable, JCA, although I was hoping that the Nats would promote Clippard once they -- finally -- convinced themselves that Machado and Reed Garrett are hopeless.

According to this, there is no mentorship arrangement.

Maybe we'll see that now that this has been written, he'll get the call. That kind of thing seems to happen a lot.

With Rainey out, here's a discussion of the pros and cons of our next closer candidates.

Quote
Kyle Finnegan is the top candidate to take his spot, although the Nats have an interesting group of pitchers who could work well as a committee. Carl Edwards Jr., Steve Cishek, and Tyler Clippard have plenty of experience in the late innings, while Andres Machado has not allowed a run over his last 10 appearances (11 IP, 0 R) and Jordan Weems has looked great the last few times out (5.1 IP, 0 ER, H, 8 K). But if the Nats are looking ahead to 2023, which they should be doing, they probably want to find out if the 30-year-old Finnegan is capable of doing the job, as well as taking a good look at Mason Thompson and Hunter Harvey, who have limited big league experience but can throw fastballs in the upper 90s.

Hunter Harvey strikes out the side in the top of the 9th. That's 10 up, 10 down tonight for the Nationals bullpen, which has allowed just 1 run over its last 25 innings.

It’s definitely our strength.   Almost all of the guys are hard throwers.  Arano and Machaddo need to be DFAed

they are about #5 and #6 in the pecking order.  They aren't supposed to be throwing hi-lev spots like Arano in the 11th last night.

Bullpen pecking order I think now is something like Finnegan and Edwards for highest leverage and closing, Harvey if one isn't available, Cishek earlier and close, then B options.
