Oh my. Those teenagers. Lock em up for treason.

What are the requirements for Yi to remain in this country since she renounced her citizenship. Will the present administration allow her to remain as an undocumented illegal? Since she has underperformed it seems like Chinese social media has turned on her.

She can set up a residence anywhere and travel around like other international athletes. She can bunk with Gu who is golden. They both have parents who have lived here a long time and are Chinese citizens  so they can live with the parents. I believe they would be considered documented. Do you think the USA will expel them rather than collect taxes on their earnings?

The skater is obviously not in the same league as Gu but the latter is estimated to have made over $15 million in 2021. Of course her side job is international fashion model. Made me think about Maria Sharapova who has lived in the USA most of her life but I believe is a Russian citizen. I believe at one time early in her career she competed as an American.

I believe both these young ladies made these decisions at 15 under the influence of their mothers.  I am sure there would be some path back to citizenship if they want.  After all we all love teenagers who do what their parents want.

It's very hard to enter the US after renouncing citizenship and she's not at the level where she'll be in demand as a exhibition skater. Gu is golden, the skater is the a totally different story

From reading some more her father is a big deal in AI and was apparently lured back to China from UCLA. Probably with the price of putting his daughter on the Olympic team over native born skaters. No one likes nepotism.

There is also no clear indication either gave up their US citizenship.  People assume that because Chinese do not allow dual citizenship. However no reason to believe they can’t include anyone on their olympic team they want.

personally, I prefer the old WBC rules that let anyone with a vowel at the end of their name play for a European country because, hey, we need some European teams.  Not to mention Israel, which has the right of return to help recruit (tbh, I'm not sure the players even had to become citizens there under the right of return.  I'll ask Ryan Lavarnway next time I see him).

They literally said it during her skate, she renounced her citizenship.

I’m not sure that article is accurate. Treasury posts lists of US citizens who have renounced their citizenship and I have seen people post that neither Zhu nor Gu are on these lists. They also kept their instagram accounts which Chinese citizens cannot have.

Quite possible. Maybe it is clear for her and not for Gu.  They keep asking her if she gave up her passport. If they know she renounced her citizenship why ask that.

Her old man must be smart. At least science smart.  I think it’s just a matter of she was never going to be good enough to make the USA team and looks like even not good enough to represent China.  As a minor she would have had to demonstrate she was doing it if her own volition. Right?  I think you have to pay money also.

Mikaela Shiffrin choking big time.  At least she has some prior medals to look back on.

First USA gold.  And some redemption.

https://www.espn.com/olympics/story/_/id/33250417/lindsey-jacobellis-wins-snowboard-cross-first-us-gold-medal-beijing-olympics
TBH, because of 2006, she was kind of the only USA athlete I did not root for. I figured she had her gold but gave it away, so i'd rather root for someone who tried.  That said, I think it's better she won it now, when she can appreciate how hard it is and how few chances you get.  It's sort of like a guy who wins the Super Bowl or World Series as a rookie and thinks "we'll do this every year" vs. a guy who had to work for his one shot.  She's more the latter now, so it's good.

Entertaining game between the Czechs and the Danes. Denmark pulls the upset in their first ever Olympic match. Goalie saved the day. And a late post.

I’m just shocked.

https://www.foxnews.com/sports/russian-figure-skaters-positive-drug-test-gold-delays-medal-ceremony.amp

Perhaps the greatest penalty and deterrent in the world for previous transgressions might not be having them be called the Olympic committee (while commentators still call them “Russia“), yet they can still get medals and official recognition from their government and from the podium?

It would make more sense if they allowed the individuals to perform to the exclude them from team events. Of course this is the IOC.

Not sure what type of advantage it would have given her but it’s apparently a banned substance. Criminal to give it to a 15 year old.
