The Games will be the first event to be broadcast in 8k resolution (within China only), after the promised Tokyo coverage didn't happen.

NHK (Japan) have led the way with 8k, effectively establishing the world standard - they always saw 4k as just a stop-gap, to keep US and European TV sales levels up, so 4k has never really caught on in Japan. NHK have the only broadcast channel in 8k (via satellite) - however, their plan to cover the Tokyo Olympics in 8k seemed to just fizzle-out. As 8k is at the limit of definition for the human eye (even with your nose pushed right against the screen, you can't see the pixels) it will be as good as it gets, in terms of definition. It also means that it's 'chocks-away' for panel size - as big as you like, with the only limit being room size.

At the rate we're going in the US, 8K will be commonplace in about 50 years. Only a tiny number of sporting events are available live in 4K here. There were two NFL Wild Card 4K broadcasts this year, and that was it. The Super Bowl won't even be available in 4K.

Strangely enough, it is likely that the adoption of 8k could come sooner than we think. This is because the broadcasters know that it will be here to stay, unlike 4k - why invest big-time in a format which shall be overtaken?  No terrestrial 4k over here (not enough bandwidth) - the premium sports channels (Sky and BT Sport) cover events in 4k, and the BBC has trialled coverage of major events through the iPlayer. The real game-changer here will be the completion of the national full-fibre gigabit broadband network (around 2026) - this is the way 8k programming will most likely be delivered. 8k TV's are already readily available here, although it will be the next model year before the new chipset standard is adopted - so hold on to those bucks for now!... ;)

Imagine how bad 40 year olds are going to look in 8K? Shudder.

Strange to see empty stadiums still. I thought they had zero COVID in China?  :hysterical:

The next winter Olympics are in Italy--should be more fun and better for USA TV coverage.

We should have boycotted the games due to Covid and human rights abuses.

What's a little genocide when a gold in freestyle skiing is on the line?

Anyone else love how Russia is excluded because of cheating, but still competing with the name Russia in their title and with Russian dignitaries in attendance?

Complete joke. We watched good chunks of the Paralympics, and they seem to have the only coverage teams that actually refer to the team as the Olympic/Paralympic committee as they were supposed to as opposed to “the Russians“

anyone else have zero interest in the olympics this year? I'm usually an olympics junkie and will watch whatever is on, but this year I just don't really find myself interested in the games.

The last Olympics, winter or summer, that I followed with any degree of seriousness was the 1992 winter games, since it would be the last dance for the Soviet hockey team (competing that year as 'Unified Team'). Since then I've mostly tuned out on the Olympics; steroid-and-blood-doping-festivals hold little interest for me.

NBC Sports has said it will broadcast live coverage of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics in 4K HDR and Dolby Atmos to U.S. viewers. Other broadcasters, including Comcast, Verizon and YouTube TV will also show some of the coverage to their users. NBC said its prime-time coverage of the Olympics, including its “Prime Plus”shows, the opening ceremony and the closing ceremony, will all be offered in 4K HDR with Dolby Atmos surround sound. NBC also confirmed that its Ultra HD broadcasts will be made available through Comcast/Xfinity, fuboTV, Verizon Fios and YouTube TV, either in select U.S. regions or the entire country. It didn’t confirm which providers will also offer Dolby Atmos audio. More details on each provider’s coverage can be found via NBC’s website. The coverage will not be available on NBC’s Peacock streaming service however, as it is currently limited to HD streams only.  Events will include figure skating, snowboarding, skiing, ice hockey, bobsled and others.

of course Harvard was Sarah Hughes recently and always was known for figure skater in the 50s and 60s.
Great ice, and most of the figure skaters were out of Massachusetts back then

Need some strong new personalities. No one wants to see Shaun White at 40.
