Why shouldn't we care about character issues. These guys have to be together eight monthes out of the year. Dukes has shown a good nack at being selfish and the team should look into it and decide if it is just a young guy making a mistake or if he won't change before any trade is made. I have faith in Manny Acta to be able to get most people to fly straight, but there are just some people that won't change. Dukes very well could end up like John Rocker who the Braves dumped off to Cleveland at a young age, but he never got his head straight to become a good teammate. Who knows what will happen with Dukes. The talent is great, but the patern is also alarming. If this is truly a bargain dump them we should provide the place for him to be dumped.

Nospin, it's not that you're not a good guy, but you are a hypocrite. You've posted countless threads and posts about honoring Cubans and playing Cubans. You then insult other ethnicies, or at the very least downplay the importance of honoring them.

Yes, Dukes has a pattern of crime, but he is still pretty young. We dont have all the facts. True, you shouldnt send threatening text messages to your girlfriend, but there probably a good chance she is just as crazy as he is. I dont think he flew off the deep end because his pasta was over cooked.

If you are going to get involved with Elijah Dukes romantically, you probably have a screw loose yourself. Its all out there in the open.

The point I'm trying to make is: it takes two to tango. These kinds of people deserver each other and they probably will kiss and make up in two weeks, then she'll call the cops because he violated the restraining order.

I'm not condoning this type of behavior, but I dont think Dukes was dating a pre-med student who just go back from the Peace Corps, which I kinda think is the picture some people have.

Would I want him dating my non-existent daughter? No. Would I like him playing good center field and hitting the crap out of the ball? Yes.

She's not a pre-med student who just got back from the Peace Corps, but she *is* a middle school teacher. If one would say that he made some mistakes in judgment and deserves another chance, one could also say that she made a mistake in judgment by becoming involved with him. In my book, nobody deserves to be threatened or attacked no matter who they become involved with.

We should care about it to the extent that it impacts his ability to perform or that of his teammates. That is the big question. Can he keep himself under control and not be a distraction in the clubhouse?

But beyond that, once you start wanting guys to exhibit a certain level of "character" or live by a certain moral code, you are probably going to disqualify a huge percentage of the players in baseball. You woudn't want most of these guys dating your sister, but that doesn't mean you don't want them on your team.

Dukes is an interesting case. He is not much different than a lot of people with similar backgrounds. We see guys like that come out of college with bad reputations and checkered pasts and many go into the NFL or other pro sports and do just fine (obviously, some don't, and they need to be weeded out). Dukes has spent his ages of 18-22 in minor league baseball, and quite frankly, that can be a really bad an environment for a young man with troubles to be exposed to. Talk about character issues. Without the right kind of mentoring within an organization, a guy like that could get lost.

I would have zero tolerance for some gangsta punk thug in the organization. But given this guy's background, it is not surprising that one run in lead to another. He is now at an age where he needs to decide what he wants and show some maturity. He deserves another chance to choose a different path.

Dmitri wasn't really a good guy when we brought him in, but he has been a good clubhouse guy. If we are going to make this trade we need to figure out if this is an isolated incident or a patern. I still will stick to what I said all along, it all depends on what we have to give up. I think the risk could be worth the reward, but it isn't worth trading a Jesus Flores or Balester. It is more on the level of a Rauch or Dee Brown.

I agree with that 100%. In many ways the team taking Dukes is doing TB a favor. He should not be traded for based solely on this baseball potential as a top prospect. There's a baggage handling fee involved here.

Due to the geographic borders in this area, Dukes has the potential to become involved in domestic relations court cases in as few or as many as seven or more jurisdictions here:
1. DC
2. Prince Georges Co., MD
3. Montgomery Co, MD
4. Arlington, VA
5. Fairfax, VA
6. Alexandria, VA
7. Falls Church, VA

In addition to any time missed from MLB suspensions, the team would also have to consider how many games he'd miss because of court dates, and the need to travel for them.

Um, wow...at this...strife

Anyway,

I have mixed feelings on Duke. On one hand, he's a tremendous talent. Despite the low BA, he seems to have plate discipline since his differential between BA and OBP is over 100 points. The ten homers at the age of 22 are what really stand out, which makes this guy potentially very valuable at CF. He could be the Nats' long-term answer from a pure talent standpoint.

His off-field problems, however, are completely alarming. It's not just that he has a few minor problems that come with youth - this guy sounds totally psychotic. Not only did he threaten his wife, but he's had problems with the law on numerous occasions, and he sounds completely ornery and unlikeable in the clubhouse.

I don't know what to think. It'd be a strange dilemma if I were GM. It depends on whether the Nationals see a viable possibility of reforming him. If they do, then they should go after him by all means. If not, then they should just forget this and consider Dunn.
