Per Zuckerman

“Martinez told Difo after homering last night to remember that’s not who he really is”

WTF? What a stupid thing to say. I think Difo knows who he is. Contact guy who can occasionally launch one.

Yes. Because Wilmer Difo is a guy who is going to regularly hit upper deck home runs.

Newsflash: guys that aren’t power guys can hit homers too. Difo got a fat pitch and annihilated it. No need for Davey to use it as a teaching moment. Congratulate the kid and keep it moving.

Of course context is key but I don’t think there’s anything wrong with telling a guy “be yourself, stick to what’s naturally you.”

Holy crap, you guys are just so dumb.

Difo is young and getting the starting job for the first time in his big league career. He knows that hes basically auditioning for the job next season.

The previous at bat, Difo had swung at three straight pitches, the last one at his eyes. So when he did it again and was rewarded, Martinez was looking to caution him against swinging for the fences.

Martinez was basically cautioning Difo from becoming Danny Espinosa and yall are taking pitchforks to him for it

If you think Martinez has lost this team, you're blind

yes, it could've been Martinez congratulating him for his contribution and then reminding him that he has value if he doesn't lose himself by trying to be something he isn't now that he is starting everyday, which young players will do

You think he's any saner than those two?

It's probably hard for him to keep up, given all of the voices in his head he has to sort out.

Nola on the mound as well and the Nats are likely to roll over for him and FP will excuse it since it's a day game after a night game

It is a pretty common thing for contact players to get caught up trying to hit for power. I wouldn't have said that publicly if I was Martinez, but I see no problem if Martinez or an assistant telling Difo great job on launching one but don't alter your plate approach.

At this point people are just looking for reasons to hate Martinez and/or blame him for everything and will ignore any positive developments.

I don't agree.  I did voice my displeasure when he was hired, but I've tried to be completely objective since - I have both criticized and praised him as I have felt appropriate. In this case I think he was wrong.  Difo is going to hit 5 or 6 homeruns per season (as a part time player, maybe 7 or 8 if he were a regular).   That's "who he is".  His homerun was one of those  5 or 6 and so he was being "who he is".  Martinez should have left it alone, let  him be "who he is".

Saying this in private is one thing. I don’t see the need to say it publicly. Although I don’t think it’s that big a deal.

We don't even know where this remark was made, though. It could have been somewhere semi-private like the locker room, which would be a completely appropriate setting, even if a nosy reporter or talkative third party was hanging around. As far as I know, this is something Zuckerman tweeted, not something from a press conference and nothing that the other beaties picked up.  None of these beaties are immune to the occasional click bait (or retweet bait).

Hate this hire. Baker was respected in the clubhouse, no one is going to give a crap about nobody Dave Martinez. Good luck to him trying to manage guys like Harper, Scherzer, and Strasburg. The Nats might still win the East if everyone else still stinks, but doubtful they win 90 games.

Hopefully his contract is just two years.

Clairvoyance.

Yep. Definitely would not have called a sweep had I known that Stras and Roark would pitch 7 innings combined.

Won't make a difference in the Nats playoff hopes but we are knocking the Phillies down a couple spots in the wild card race.

Probably I would have started the guy who hit the walk off the night before, but that's only because I wanted the Nats to sweep the Phillies, Martinez seems to have had some other plan in mind.

Martinez getting into the head of Difo that is another example of why he should be fired what a moron. :hysterical:

Can't believe the Nats wasted Harper's likely last year.  This kind of finish makes it even less likely he signs here.  As well as the fact the manager next year will looks like continue to be a joke.

Difo knows what kind of player he is and what he needs to do he doesn't need a man who knows virtually nothing about baseball to tell him how to play.
