So long, Tanner & Welcome, Tanner
« Topic Start: December 12, 2018, 07:16:47 PM »
We traded Tanner Roark to the Reds for RHP Tanner Rainey, who spent most of the year in AAA (2.65 ERA as a reliever) but got destroyed in the majors (though most of the damage came from one 0.2 IP, 8 ER outing in a 19-3 loss).

Slate just willed this into existence

So the rotation now is Scherzer, Strasburg, Corbin, Ross, and Fedde?

I'm guessing we'll be picking up another SP.

I gotta think we're expecting to add at least one more starter - Roark could easily be projected to give us 25-30 starts at 4-4.5 ERA which has its own value considering our crap options. This is interesting and I'm surprised.

I'm unhappy he left also.  Dude made my weight gain look small.

Tanner R for Tanner R. 40% of MLB players in all of history with the first name Tanner were involved in this trade.

Rizzo has a thing for right-handed flamethrowers this off-season.  That's three so far.

Look, I think we all have a bead on Rizzo (who I love by the way). And I think we all probably know how it probably went over when Tanner showed up 20 lbs heavy this spring, and then had a bad year while we missed the playoffs. I’ll miss him, but he showed up to the fashion show wearing 38/30 jeans, and Rizzo never forgot it.

Aren't Ross and Fedde on guaranteed contracts? Anyways I think we are assured of adding another starter now. Anibal Sanchez has been floated around as a possible starter.

And I think we found our new closer of the future with our new Tanner. Dude can bring it. Just needs to find the strikezone and cut out the walks. Sounds like a guy we traded to Oakland who became a stud reliever.

May have eaten himself out of a job. Guess the spare tire was getting bigger. Only so many C.C. Sabathia's out there.

Reported this AM #Nationals were not sure Roark’s 2018 season justified potential $10M in arb. Sources say ownership voiced greatest concern. Front office did not consider salary unreasonable for Roark, who essentially was league-average, 180-inning pitcher past two seasons.

I really wonder about the relationship between Rizzo and the Lerners.

Excerpt on Rainey from the Blog Red Machine. Written in Sep 2018:

"... how dominant (Rainey) has been in Triple-A for the Louisville Bats this season. ... Rainey is 6-2 with a 2.12 ERA in 41 games. What’s even more impressive is that over 46.2 innings pitched, he has 60 strikeouts and a .149 average along with a 1.14 WHIP."

.149 average against and a 1.14 WHIP makes me afraid to look at his walk totals.

I think that trading him for a right handed version of Enny Romero pretty much justifies my position on him.

Doubt it. But if moving Tanner and Eaton results in a cheap number 5 and Bryce, it's hard to argue with that

I bet Rizzo gets a starter and a 2B for close to the 10 mil we were due to pay Roark.

I hope Rizzo has something in the works.  Gonna be hard to find that number of reliable league average innings at a better price isn't it?   would make sense if you were going to trade for a more controllable, cheaper starter...that might save money...but that's gonna take a good prospect.  Or he's going all in on a bigger move to really upgrade.  Hmmm....will be interesting to see.  Will miss Tanner - have seen some take shots at him, but he had a good career as a Nat, coming out of nowhere.  Very likeable guy to boot.
