Harper on his hands and knees, BEGGING the Dodgers to offer him $35 million a year so he can save face and sign with them even if it's a shorter-term deal.

It seems clear enough to me by now that Harper doesn't want to play in Philly, and certainly not for 10 years, probably not even two years; maybe one.  So I'm guessing he's asking for an opt-out after one year.  That way, he can get the "record breaking" contract he wants. It's all fake money anyway if he opts out but opting out wouldn't change the fact that he got that record breaking contract.  And I'm also guessing that the Phillies don't want to let him opt out before their window of opportunity expires - So they probably don't want an opt until after year five.  I think that's what this is all about, and it isn't going to be resolved. Harper is going to decide he really is willing to take a short term deal, say five years, to play some place where he will be happy. And I'm guessing it's going to be LA.

I agree. Wifey wants west coast.

Wifey gets what she wants.

Pretty simple. For now.  Will get more complicated with the second wife.

If the Phillies don't get Harper, it's very likely they will sign Kimbrel.   I'd rather see Harper there.

Yeah pretty clear to me that Boras reached out and said Bryce would be willing to do a short-term deal there

Pretty clear to me Harper needs a new agent.  Boras wanted to play hardball, but he and Bryce were the only ones who showed up to the field.

It also might be that Bryce literally doesn't have a single team besides the Phillies giving him a real offer, and the Phillies offer might be something like the White Sox were offering Machado - their final offer to Manny was 8/$250 with two vesting options bringing it up to 10/$325.

So Boras might have very little leverage over the Phillies to up their offer, and may be desperately trying to reengage other teams, even on suboptimal deals, just to appear to the Phillies like Bryce might have another option.

Boras certainly did fail at predicting the market the last 2 years. From my eyes, he seemed to operate as if its business as usual. Everyone else seen it wasn't.

Exactly why I said health is the concern... Not the Phillies, or the Braves, or the Mets.

We have power in the lineup. Rendon, Zimmerman/Adams, Soto, Dozier.

We have 4 Hitters that are .280 and above. And 4 that are .260. That wins games.

We win the division last year if we won 9 more games. And I can assume 9 games if I wasn't missing Murphy, Zimmerman, Stras and Doolittle for months. And I believe I will have better results from Corbin and Sanchez vs. Gif and Tanner.

But yes, if we have half the team on the DL for months at a time we won't win. That applies to any team.
And what makes you think they won't be gone fore months this year too?

None of that power touches Harper. No one in that lineup is feared.

I didn’t assume they won’t. I said if they are they win, if they aren’t they don’t. And that applies to any team.

They don’t need to be feared. They need to hit .260 and above. They need to play good defense. They need to pitch well. They need to not make mistakes on the bases. They are capable of doing all this.

They also need to stay healthy. Can they, we will see.

Also "no one is feared" is such a BS term that has no meaning. Rendon and Soto both had higher OPS+ than Harper last year.

I'll be perfectly fine with pitchers not fearing Juan Soto, tbh :) Have fun with that.

Big picture my friend.  .295 / .427 /   .372 in the AFL too.

For comparison:
Soto: .292 / .406 / .517 in A, A+, and AA

Kieboom: .280    / .357 / .444

Watch him play.

Because no believes that Sota is going to hit .320 with 40 bombs.

Even if he is, they're not going to burn a year of control when they have Dozier. Especially when Rendon hasn't been extended.

Lol. As a 19-year old his 162-game average last year was .292 with 31 HR. He put up as much offense in 2/3 of a season as Bryce did in a full season.

Soto has a high ceiling and could hit for some pretty lofty power and average numbers.  His body of work is pretty small, and he kind of came out of nowhere, so there isn't much more than last year to evaluate him on.

I don't not believe that he could hit .320 for 40 HRs.   But, Bryce Harper did a lot of what he did without seeing more than one strike at bat or even a game sometimes.  If Soto starts hot and gets that treatment, how's he going to handle it?   I'd have had a lot more confidence in Soto continuing where he left off if he wasn't going to have to be the main power guy this year.

Soto’s ceiling is ridiculously high, I think the problem is that his floor isn’t particularly high- the body of work just isn’t enough to pencil him in as a star
