Manny’s first Boston deal was enormous at the time and worked out pretty well

Okay how about this, a long term deal that worked out for the team signed since 2002, 17 years ago or later. Every GM in baseball today who has signed or thought about signing a player to a long term deal.
I can't give you Werth. Not for what he was paid vs his production. If you google Jason Werth contract the first thing that comes up is Was Jason Werths contract really that bad. If you google all-time worst contracts his is usually on it, though it might not be for long with all the bad contracts teams are stuck with now.
The red sox will be paying Ramirez until 2026 though that doesn't make it a bad contract.

We've seen the completed seven-year deal with Werth in D.C. Knowing everything we know, I'm OK with saying he was a bit overpaid. I'm not OK with acting like this was a terrible contract for the Nationals. In fact, he helped them a lot more than he harmed them. My bet is if the Nationals had to do it over, they'd do the exact same thing. I wouldn't blame them, either.

The Sabathia and Teixeira signings worked out pretty well for the Yanks.  Adrian Beltre put in some very productive years with the Rangers.

Sabathia and Teixera are perfect examples of what I assume the GMs look at today.
Sabathia would have been a good deal at 4 years. At 8 years they paid a lot of money for not a lot of production.
Teixera would have been good for a 3 or 4 year contract but at 8 they paid a lot of money when he was an albatross.
Beltre is a good example too. At 6 years and 80 million his was a good manageable contract.

Having said that CC Sabathia is THE MAN. I remember his last year in Milwaukee. They were trying to get into the playoffs and CC was a free agent at the end of the year. The Brewers were pitching him constantly on short rest. His agent told him he could blow many millions of dollars if he blew out his arm and not to pitch on short rest. He ignored his agent and wanted to pitch on short rest to help the club.

The out years have always been the price for winning a bid for guys like that. I think most teams would rather the bad out years that the absurd AAV that it would take to convince a guy like that to sign a short term deal

Judging from the unsigned free agents that are still out there it seems like GMs are not willing to eat 4 or 5 years of paying big bucks for little production anymore. They apparently are only willing to go so high on deals shorter than that also. Whatever happens I assume Harper and Machado will probably end up between upper 20's to lower 30's a year. It will be interesting to see the number of years.

Sabathia's deal worked out great for the Yankees. A world series win and at age like 38 he's still productive. He had a couple rough years but overall that's a contract the Yankees take every day.

The nats already offered the years, it’s just a matter of getting as much money as they can,”. I’d be shocked to see either sign a 4 or 5 year deal

That's assuming the Nats offer is still on the table and nobody really knows that.

Lets be real for a second

1) the Nats want Harper. They didn’t offer him a 10 year deal for craps and giggles. Commitment to a 10 year deal means they want him

B) Boras leaked the offer to act as a baseline.

C) The reason we haven’t heard about other offers is because the Nationals haven’t been out bid in one of the key areas. Either annual salary, number of years, and/or total value.

D) Boras would have leaked the other offers if they were better to run up the total.

90% that’s all correct

But since that time they have signed Corbin and others?  The key I believe is progress on Rendon.  If they think he may go free agent then there could still be room for Royce.  This guy thinks that way.

I don’t think it matters much honestly because assuming Harper took the offer when first given

A) they were still gonna target Corbin

B) they were gonna try and extend Rendon

The way they look at this WHOLE situation is like this: at absolute worse case... they get under luxury tax after this season or close to it.

They’ve made their offer based on what they value him at and could possibly up it slightly. And that value is still true for them.

90% that’s all correct also

not so sure--I don't think they bid so much on Corbin if Harper accepts that offer.  More likely they would have been trading Eaton and Taylor and prospects for a pitcher.  Just my opinion.

Makes sense but they need a legit pitcher. A Corbin level pitcher that they wouldn’t have got for Eaton. Sure they’d move him for prospects.

It should be clear that the plan before the season was over that they wanted to win in 2019, not retool or rebuild. They wanted to get better.

Besides the fact that they have had meetings with Harper after all the signings.

Yes, but notice no news on Rendon.  I don't think he is getting extended.

I think the idea is shoot for just below Machado. Or at least it was this before this off season.

Also he’s in no rush. It’s a good bet that was the advice given.

But look at the market over the last few seasons, he will get his desired annual salary. Not long term years. And The Nats are spending money.

Spring training is just around the corner.  Tell Bryce and Boras that starting now, the total contract offer drops by $2 mill every day.

The Nats offered the 10 year 300 million knowing Boras wasn't going to accept that offer at that time. It was a we gave him a solid offer that he didn't accept situation. Then they addressed all their other needs and shut the door on any 10 years for Harper. The Nats are not signing Harper.

CC Sabathia had four good years in the 8 year deal. His last 4 were:

W - 14 L - 13 ERA - 4.78
W - 3 L - 4 ERA - 5.28
W - 6 L - 10 ERA - 4.73
W - 9 L - 12 ERA - 3.91

Todays GMs apparently don't want to be burdened with 4 or 5 years of 80 to 100 million dollars with no production.

Also add ownership keeps meeting with Harper because their own kids and grand kids won’t visit.

I think once Machado signs the market will be set for Rendon and there's a chance he'll sign an extension then. Not a good chance but a chance.
