Except Hellickson was actually decent at the MLB level . . .

Copeland has never got a chance.

I'm betting that's why Mark Lerner said it was off the table at this point.

They can't lower it. Even if he came back because it was the best offer it would permanently affect the relationship, which they've handled beautifully to this point. If they can sign him to 10/$300 million with no opt outs, they should jump at it imo.

Corbin, Dozier, Sanchez, etc. permanently affected the relationship. He should have jumped. He didn't. It's all changed now.

I don't agree.  If he said he'd come for the original offer, I think the Lerners would say yes.

I don't really agree with this. I think what re-signing him would mean is we're saying goodbye to Rendon and not doing anything with Zimmerman's money when it comes off the books next year. Zimmerman and Rendon count for $36.8 million this season, and just $2 million next season (Zimmerman's buyout).

So you pay the tax for a season and then dip back below next year.

Man. I hope not. I'd take Rendon over Harper any day of the week. I hope that Rizzo is on the same wavelength, and has the Lerners in tune, too.

If it comes down to the Nats, it'll be interesting to see which story line plays out -- "Lerners are tough businessmen" (meaning they won't pay more than they need to, and will cut that original offer ) or "Bryce is like a son to the family."

This back and forth is going to go on for a while. If the Phillies haven't actually made an offer, it's because they want Machado. It's obvious Machado doesn't want to go to Philly. Harper likely wants LA, and is holding out for their best offer. My guess is Harper leverages Philly to get a better deal in LA, or just comes back to the Nats, although I think that ship honestly has sailed.

Unless Boras truly pulls a miracle I don't see how he walks away from this offseason without an egg on his face.

I wish I could get some of that commission egg on my face.  He'll be alright.

He's still going to make a ton of money but I don't see him getting the monster deal he has hyped up for years.

He's successfully generated more hype and intrigue about where Harper is going to sign than any MLB free agent in history in large part because 400 and 500 million were put out there.  I doubt he actually expected to land that much.  People want to go "haha you didn't get that much."  He never expected to.  But he created a ton of pub, made Harper even more famous and himself more famous, and he'll end up with close to if not a record-breaking contract still.  He knows what he's doing.

I agree with Rendon over Harper given their likely contracts, say Rendon at 6/$140 million and Harper at 10/$300.

Then again, there should be some serious concerns over Rendon as well. Since 2005, just 3 3B have put up 20 or more WAR over the 6 seasons from age 30-35, and those are three HOFers - A-Rod, Beltre, Rolen.

Rolen just imo I guess, although I think he's a clear-cut HOFer.

Of course the hype is there but Harper and Boras were already the most famous MLB player and most famous agent already. I think he'll get a really fat deal but if the hype ends in a wet fart and an obvious face-saving deal he'll get questioned. I know if I'm a player I'm looking at this situation going, "It's mid-January and it looks like only 1-2 teams are even interested in Harper - what the hell?" These aren't the days of the Yankees throwing around 7-year deals to anyone with a .300 BA.

Also his hype for Harper is pretty much just Harper himself and the circumstances around him. Boras hasn't done anything on his own beyond throw out enormous numbers. What if he gets a Giancarlo Stanton-type deal, maybe $10 million more overall? He looks like a maroon. I just think Boras may have overplayed his hand. His client is arguably the #2 free agent in his own class and what if he gets a smaller deal than Manny?
