over on the Nationals' sub forum on Reddit, they've turned it into a forum for discussing national parks.

Sounds more productive.  :hysterical:

We led 5-0 going into the bottom of the 9th in San Diego with Cordero pitching. A sure win.  After four batters it was 5-1 with the bases loaded.  How'd that happen, I think (but not completely sure) homerun then three walks.  Then a Khalil Greene grand slam. He was about a .200 hitter.  So it was tied and I think we lost in extra innings.

So why was that so devastating to so many of us?  You have to look at it in the context of the whole season. Incredible first half, slowly sliding out of contention over the course of the entire second half and I think this game was around mid-August.  And Cordero. Everyone loved him, he had had an incredible first half and was fading along with the team.  I know that it had a strong emotional effect on me.

The other thing about the Khalil Green game was that it happened well after midnight.  I remember staying up to listen on the radio in my kitchen, and just waiting for the game to end so I could go to bed.  I'm pretty sure I didn't sleep at all that night after what happened.  As I recall, we lost another dagger game in that series on Sunday that pretty much ended our 2005 season chances.  Very similar to the past weekends series in Chicago.

“We’ve been following the team for a while, and things generally get pretty negative on discussion boards when the season, team or players disappoint,” said purplepenned, another moderator. “But I think good moderation also means trying to keep things from spiraling too out of hand emotionally. So cracking jokes and making light of the situation can be a fun way to pass the time and release some stress.”

Humor can help so I say more gifs and threads like bluestreak's "Trade Soto" thread. Not sure recounting the most painful losses in team history is good therapy. Might want to rethink that one.

Having a 100 loss season is preferable to this.
The 2008 and 2009 seasons were miserable on every level. Imagining it without the hope of Strasburg is even worse.

Meh, winning seasons are awesome, the gallows humor in hopeless seasons is kind of fun, lurching in the middle knowing the season is probably over and just waiting for it to play out isn’t

Hopeless seasons are fun because you get to see a team being constructed and young players develop. Disappointing seasons can be fun if you hang in there and hope your team turns it around and becomes quite the story. It's all fun if you put in perspective. But, yeah, winning is always more fun.

So you'd rather be the Orioles?

Sanity.

Either you have "WHERE WAS HE GOING?" or you have "we're 20 games up," those are awesome. But this? 60-60 in a freefall while we blueballs our way through the last 6 weeks, with our owner and GM telling us we're crazy for seeing a crap team? this sucks.

I feel like there should be folks that remember the bad teams in DC. I remember when the Tigers were awful. That was not fun. day in and day out losing is not enjoyable. At all.

But I don't particularly care either way. I'd love winning and will hope for it, but in the end, a day at the park, even if they lose, is still a damn good day.

I started watching baseball with the Nats in 2007. It led me to have really low expectations from the team, and I enjoyed the improvement from 2009-2011. 2012 was a whole new experience for me (I don't follow other sports, so it was the first time I got to watch a team make it to the playoffs). They seemed like the team of destiny after the Game 4 Werthquake. The Game 5 dagger was absolutely -brutal-.

Much like BiL has mentioned earlier in the thread, it hit me really hard. And after a month or so, I realized it hit me -way- too hard for something that, at the end of the day, is just a bunch of sort of grown ass men playing a kid's game. I'm disappointed in this season (and 2013 and 2015), but it's not causing me depression or angst. At best, I feel a bit of disgust when I watch something like the Cubs walk off.  Easy to be armchair manager, but I told my wife that after the second HBP this was going to end really badly and they needed to change pitchers ASAP.

For now, I can just sort of put my enthusiasm on pause. If they get to four back by the end of the month, I'll start watching every game again instead of just the Max starts. Until then, I'll just spend more time with my family or with a backlog of books and look forward to the off season stories like 'Who signs Bryce and for how much?'

By the time we were tanking for Strasburg and Harper, it actually was fun. The team was god awful, but there was humor in it - Bergman pitching was always fun in game day threads

it's frustrating now knowing that this had the potential to be a special team.  It still seems like we have one of the best lineups in baseball.  We just have crap for pitching outside of max.

What, hanging on by your fingernails is not fun? Seriously, if you turn it around, then it's quite the rush. If not, so what? You save money on playoff tickets or something. I just put in perspective and move on.

I like to see young players develop but there were not many keepers from those teams. It was frustrating.

injuries to some key players played a part also but I still feel Harper sucking balls the first half of the season was the main reason the team is where it's at now.

In the last two weeks alone, having a healthy Herrera/Doolittle would have chopped the lead in half....

It depends on what you're looking for in life. Some people are happy being unhappy.
