I definitely remember Khalil Greene as a Nationals killer, but my memory is failing me as to the specific moment and game. Google-fu isn't helping (MLB has been getting better but still lacks a robust video archive), can someone help me out?
We led 5-0 going into the bottom of the 9th in San Diego with Cordero pitching. A sure win. After four batters it was 5-1 with the bases loaded. How'd that happen, I think (but not completely sure) homerun then three walks. Then a Khalil Greene grand slam. He was about a .200 hitter. So it was tied and I think we lost in extra innings.
So why was that so devastating to so many of us? You have to look at it in the context of the whole season. Incredible first half, slowly sliding out of contention over the course of the entire second half and I think this game was around mid-August. And Cordero. Everyone loved him, he had had an incredible first half and was fading along with the team. I know that it had a strong emotional effect on me.
