I was so upset after this debacle that I couldn’t fall asleep until nearly 2:00am. Still POed I thought to my self, “I’m not setting the alarm, I’ll go into work when I feel damn good and ready”! Got to work so late my fellow workers were thinking, “yeah, he killed himself this time”.

it could have been worse: Minor league team loses in the 9th with the bases loaded, 2 outs and 2 strikes when the pitcher throws a wild pitch, and then the catcher commits a throwing error, allowing all three runners on base to score.  To make it worse, the wild pitch was strike 3.

Was this the most heartbreaking non-playoff loss in Nationals history? I'm hard-pressed to recall one that tops this.
Scott Allen mentioned an 8-7 loss to the Mets in 2015 when we were trying to catch them was another candidate.

Sunday’s loss was among the worst regular-season defeats in Nationals history, perhaps second only to an 8-7 loss to the Mets on Sept. 8, 2015. Washington entered that game at Nationals Park in similar position, trailing New York by five games in the National League East standings. The Nationals rocked Mets starter Matt Harvey for seven earned runs in 5 1/3 innings and took a 7-1 lead into the seventh inning.

With two outs and a man on first base, the bullpen needed only seven outs to even the series and set up an important rubber game. Blake Treinen walked David Wright and allowed a run-scoring single to Wilmer Flores. Felipe Rivero replaced Treinen and promptly walked Juan Uribe and Curtis Granderson to force in another run. With the score 7-3, Nationals Manager Matt Williams called upon Drew Storen, who allowed a bases-clearing double to Yoenis Cespedes that cut the Washington lead to 7-6. Storen wasn’t done sinking the Nationals’ playoff hopes. He then walked Daniel Murphy, David Wright and Lucas Duda in succession to tie the game. Mets outfielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis provided the decisive run in the eighth inning with a solo home run off Jonathan Papelbon.

there's also the Khalil Greene game.

Last night at the conclusion of the game I threw my cell phone across the room.  My wife was on me all night and half the day about my tantrum.  Finally, I said "do you remember the Khalil Greene game".  Of course she didn't know what I was talking about.  I told her I threw a broom across the room then. She remembered that part.  Point is (I told her) that was 13 years ago. One tantrum every 13 years isn't unreasonable.

The remaining games should not be played.  The players and manager should be jailed without bail, on charges of being degenerate losers.  Who's with me on this?

Ha thanks, I get this reaction every time I post. Don't call it a comeback, I've been here all day. Infrequent poster, but diehard fan.

I definitely remember Khalil Greene as a Nationals killer, but my memory is failing me as to the specific moment and game. Google-fu isn't helping (MLB has been getting better but still lacks a robust video archive), can someone help me out?

I remember the 9-0 blown lead to the Braves in 2012 but that was in July, they were in 1st place and won 18/23 after that game.

Zuck notes we’ve now lost six games since the ASB in which we were tied or ahead in the seventh.

Nothing new for this team. For 5 years our BP has let us down in one way or the other.

I used to have a running tally of how many leads the pen blew but I lost count.

Is there a source that tracks runners LOB and left on in scoring position for the season by player?

We led 5-0 going into the bottom of the 9th in San Diego with Cordero pitching. A sure win.  After four batters it was 5-1 with the bases loaded.  How'd that happen, I think (but not completely sure) homerun then three walks.  Then a Khalil Greene grand slam. He was about a .200 hitter.  So it was tied and I think we lost in extra innings.

So why was that so devastating to so many of us?  You have to look at it in the context of the whole season. Incredible first half, slowly sliding out of contention over the course of the entire second half and I think this game was around mid-August.  And Cordero. Everyone loved him, he had had an incredible first half and was fading along with the team.  I know that it had a strong emotional effect on me.

But, but.....  I thought that always ended up averaging out over the course of the season?!?  Was I misinformed?

over on the Nationals' sub forum on Reddit, they've turned it into a forum for discussing national parks.
