The icing on the cake tonight was watching Jeopardy on the dvr after the game.  Drew Storen was one of the clues, I crap you not.  :hang:

One certainly could hear Red Sox Nation in the stands over the radio broadcast last night.

Nats vs Red Siox in the Fourth of July holiday...what meathead in the commissioner's office (or whoever is responsible for drawing up the MLB schedules) thought this one up?  I'm just glad I sold all three of my tickets to this series quite some time ago.

I started keeping random notes during the game because there was so much worth talking about.

1) Key early money was the Sandy Leon K on a Max wild pitch.  Bradley, the next batter, is horrible.  Probably not pitcher-bad, but it set up the IBB and Porcello's chance.
2) Before the 4th, Tom Goodwin, Sox 1st base coach, did not go straight to the 1st base coaching box.  Instead, he stood near the dugout looking up to the area behind the high price seats where the service members are, waiting through the wave your caps bit before the announcer calls attention to the service members and asks they be recognized. Goodwin then applauded them and waited to go to the coaches box until the scene was done. He was specifically waiting for the bit.  I forget if Goodwin coached in the NL recently, but he was aware that it was going to happen.
3) Absolute idiocy for Murphy to test Mookie's arm going to 3d when the team was down 3 runs.  It would have been dumb if he was running normally.  A key runner wiped out when he was in scoring position.
4) For a 2 inning stretch in the 2d and 3d, Max had no clue where his ball was going.
5) Had a beer with Tomterp
6) found myself rooting for the NYY for the first time  since the '01 world series.  I figured the best two results would be to neutralize the two series (no impact on standings).
7) I did golf clap Rendon's homer and say "boom" on Harper's.
8 ) Max's 1000K drew bipartisan cheers.  I was not alone in the whole dual loyalty thing.  While wore a Sox cap and my Pedro HOF tee shirt, I did see a lot of folks with dual logo stuff. Sat next to a woman with a 20 game package who decided to wear all Nats but was from the Brockton area (I shocked her when she said the town and I knew her high school right away.9) I thought Cora went dangerously close to pushing Porcello too far.  Third time through the order, letting him face Rendon, etc...
10) Davey got a good inning out of TIMMEH! setting him up to pitch to a stack of lefties. Kintzler, OTOH, what can you say :(

For me, it got to the point where I spent a lot of time rooting for good plays from my favorites (Betts / Bogaerts / Benintendi, etc... but also Rendon, Soto, TIMMEH! etc...).

OldChelsea and other MASN Boycotters could have watched the game on ESPN.  Saturday's game is on FOX, (channel 5 in the DC area), so you can watch that on TV too:

Sat, Jul 7 vs Miami 7:15 PM on FOX
Max Scherzer (RHP, 10-4, ERA 2.04, IP 114.2, SO 165, BB 27, WHIP 0.85)
vs Wei-Yin Chen (LHP, 2-5, ERA 6.14, IP 55.2, SO 41, BB 25, WHIP 1.62)

...noted...but these cannot hold a candle to the incomparable Charlie and Dave.

As far as the Marlins series this weekend I'm planning on being in the house on Sunday (really want to get one more in-person match in before I head out for a week in Estonia on the 17th)...with the mercury down to a more reasonable low-to-mid-80's and no precip expected this looks promising (doesn't hurt matters either that TBSITH is usually out of the direct sublight from about 14.30)..

Red Sox fans have always travelled very well. Combine that with the facts that everyone in DC leaves DC for the Fourth, and the Nats haven’t been goodnight lately,  and last night was essentially Fenway South. Gotta applaud the Nats fans in my section last night; we tried to shout the Sox fans down, but there were just too many of them.

On the radio I did hear section 313 (which is right across from TBSITH) bringing the 'N-A-T-S NATS NATS NATS' a bit louder than usual.

...and you're right, everybody in DC travels on the 4th - on that date last year I was flying back from a week in Lithuania.

Pro Tip: You can turn down the volume on the FOX or ESPN broadcast to zero, but Charlie & Dave's radio broadcasts don't always sinc up to the picture.

I have noticed this non-synchronisation on NFL broadcasts - the radio and telly-audio feeds can often be quite out of sync.

I think some of the Red Sox Nation presence this series is due to them being in town for the first time since '09.  It is still a rarity. They don't do OPACY as much (much easier to get tickets to Sox/Os games than it used to be).  I think a fair number of the Red Sox fans are now DMV residents.  I think 7/4 also is an incentive to travel down here (take a break from the Pops and the Esplanade).  Reverse the dates of the NYY and BOS series, and I'm not sure the Red Sox fans show up in the same numbers.

It's true that the major Bostom-area universities (Harvard, MIT, BC, BU etc) have a lot of alumni down here, many of them in major positions.

Indeed. We always have an ocean of Away fans for the 4th. When we played the Brewers, we had probably 40% brewers fans, and brewers fans don’t have the reach of many other teams. Who wouldn’t want to go see the fireworks on the National Mall on the 4th? Well except people who live here and have been there/done that...

Anyway I’d rather have the Red Sox fans than the Yankees fans, despite their big voices, as the Yankees fan base is just infinitely more annoying (although a carload of drunk Red Sox fans for some reason felt compelled to cuss out all the Nats fan pedestrians as they drove down South Cap last night; not the smartest move in a traffic jam...)
