There may be ways to play the numbers that give him a bigger guarantee than $18MM but lower the AAV.  Problem is his money is front-loaded.  Something like 2/$28MM more or less increases his guarantee substantially ($8MM) but lowers his payout if he has a decent 2019 and his option would have been picked up.  Maybe something like $12MM/ $12MM + an option for 2021 at $16MM with a $4MM buyout would balance risk v. lower AAV.

On the other hand, while his post ASB numbers are even better than his season numbers for 2017, the whole thing with him is health, and he's not going to put up those numbers when he's not healthy.  This year, he was not right for half the year.  He's aging and injury-prone, so you cannot reasonably expect him to put up these numbers for a full year.

I’m just going to leave this here...

https://districtondeck.com/2018/09/11/washington-nationals-offer-ryan-zimmerman-new-deal-winter/

:lmao: I can hear the screeching from certain posters here

Why would the next contract affect 2019?

It would, effectively, be a new deal, taking effect next season. If both sides agrees, you can rip up your current deal and get a new one at any time.

Wonder if this would free up enough money to fire Martinez :stir:

Only as it relates to our ability to sign more important pieces.

Didn't A-Rod try to re do his contract to save the team money and have it voided by the union? I can't remember exactly.

Rangers and Red Sox had a deal in place, where ARod agreed to take less than the contract called for, which was contrary to the bargaining agreement and so MLB voided it.  So he was traded to the Yankees for full value.

You freaked up too.

Everyone knows the real original face of the franchise was/is Chief Cordero. :)

Brad Wilkerson.

He's been scorching the ball in the last two years. If he wants a couple of more years in a platoon/bench situation - if you could embed that expectation -  I'd sign him. I bet he'd be okay off the bench.

Given that 100 AB to get going trope, I'm not so sure the bench is the best place for him if you want production.

So we're on the hook for $20M and 1 year.  I could see going $30MM for three years.  It isn't the craziest idea I've ever heard and does let him wind his career down as a Nat.  But it would have to be understood as whatever role was needed.

$30M for 3 years, by the time the union got through with that, would be $20M for 2019 and $5M for each of 2020 and 2021. Which might not be that bad a deal.

Why would he sign for 3 years for $30MM each when he'll get either $20MM for 1 (2019+2020 buy out) if we don't pick up his option, or $36MM for 2 (2019-2020) if we do pick up his option?

I don't see him biting on that...nor should we do it...

30 million > 21 million

Not worth 2 years of work...especially if he has to participate in spring training...

Tropes are, well, tropes. For Zimm, I think it's health that counts. Just an uninformed opinion.

Brad Wilkerson.

Before there was Zimm to subject us to his terrible acting in Geico commercials, there was Brad Wilkerson subjecting us to his horrible acting in Chevy Chase Bank ads.

Ok, ok, I see what you did there... :)

I'd add Jose Guillen. Or even Livan or Brad Wilkerson.

But remember that first year ?  Watching one game out of 3 on Channel 20 ?

The excitement, for long term fans, was getting Zimm in the draft.  He's the face of the franchise.

Two misplayed balls that cost the Nats dearly.

Someone needs to explain to him that he doesnt need to play first like he played third

It’s Martinez’ fault. And Doolittle for smiling.

In Zims defense looking over his entire career he is responsible for a lot more wins than losses and I’m not just talking about walkoffs.

Agreed. But his style has been the same throughout his short tenure at first. At third, it was understandable, because it's do or die. You bobble the ball, you're probably not going to get the base runner. But first is different and he needs to realize that. Knock down the ball.
