Watching Zim headed for another 0-4 night I'm trying to recap the replies on this thread in my mind. The Nats were right to keep him this off-season because A) he is too good to part with, after this slow April he'll bounce back to his old self, B) his value was so low no other team would take him, even if the Nats ate some salary, or C) he's got us by the balls with his no trade clause so we had no choice but to hope for the best.

.420 last April and .319 in May. Less than .300 May - August and .329 last Sept. Sucked in July  and August .234 and .233

Get those facts out of here.

fan graphs currently ranks him last among all MLB players in WAR

to add: .135 BAbip., or 175 points below his .310 career average.  This is crazy.  At this point you'd think a 10 day DL trip simply to play at Potomac or another ML affiliate would be the best course of action for him.

BABIP of .135 is unthinkable for a major league ball player. It simply cannot continue for long. His BABIP was .235 in 2016 and .268 in 2015. He’s unlucky. Even if he’s much worse than last year, he is simply not this bad.

That is a lineup that won't win many games. We need to get healthy and the stink off of MAT and RZ.

I’m not sure how much of an upgrade a guy who has been out of the majors for three year is

All I did was move him to 9 and move everyone behind him up one.  Lazy of me.  This is probably better:

1. Trea Turner (R) SS
2. Howie Kendrick (R) 2B
3. Bryce Harper (L) RF
4. Wilmer Difo (S) 3B
5. Pedro Severino (R) C

All I’m saying is that it’s going to awfully embarrassing if he doesn’t pick it up by the time the Ryanaissance bobblehes night rolls around.

I love Difo but all this gets you is Bryce still walkin' and Wilmer a whole lot of low-and-away to swing wildly at.
I guess Howie would be your best choice?

As easy as everyone thinks it is, I don’t think that this is an easy lineup to construct.

It's not an easy lineup to construct missing three of our four best hitters.  Nevertheless - now I haven't done the research - but I believe #4 comes to bat with more men on base than any other position in the lineup.  Would you agree?   It's a sin to put the worst hitter in baseball in that spot.

I completely agree but this is an organizational thing and has been happening with Zimmerman for years, the same way they insisted on playing Werth in last year's postseason when he was a detriment to the success of the team.

I agree, the managers get blamed, but I'd bet that there is more input from Rizzo than the team will admit.

Martinez is supposed to be a SABR guy, just plug the stats into the computer and out pops the line up, nothing could be easier.

I think maybe this may have something to do with Zim batting 4th.

He's making hard contact, maybe he'll get his groove back at the plate, maybe he'll just pull himself back up from the bottom of the league in OPS, but regardless of how Zim recovers at the plate he does not belong on a baseball field while his team is on defense.
