26 losses by our relievers by my count whereas the 7 guys on my list have 13 losses.

So theoretically we would have an 87-60 record right now with a 5 game lead on the Braves.

So basically it's not far fetched to say that with a capable bullpen we are probably in the playoffs this year.

Blake Treinen
72.1 innings, 6 wins, 2 losses, .87 ERA, .871 WHIP, 37 saves

Tyler Clippard
63.2 innings, 4 wins, 3 losses, 3.68 ERA, 1.168 WHIP, 7 saves

AJ Cole
36 innings, 3 wins, 0 losses, 3.00 ERA, 1.306 WHIP

Yusmeiro Petit
87 innings, 7 wins, 3 losses, 3.10 ERA, 1.034 WHIP

Craig Stammen
71.1 innings, 8 wins, 2 losses, 2.52 ERA, 1.037 WHIP

Oliver Perez
28.1 innings, 0 wins, 1 loss, .95 ERA, .635 WHIP

Jerry Blevins
38 innings, 3 wins, 2 losses, 3.55 ERA, 1.237 WHIP

What could have been.

The most dominant closer in baseball. A dependable setup man in Clippard. Two of the leagues best longmen in Stammen and Petit which would have been a godsend with our starters being injured, two very good lefties for situational pitching and Cole to use in mop ups.

Rizzo cannot build a bullpen. That much is clear.

Treinen was broken
Clippard is old and has been much worse since leaving the team
AJ Cole didn't want to relieve
Petit - Okay, we tried. He didn't last here.
Stammen - Broken. Didn't want to stay here.
Perez and Blevins - LOOGYs

2017 bullpen:

Sean Doolittle - 2.40 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, 21 saves in 30IP
Ryan Madson - 1.37 ERA, 0.81   WHIP,
Matt Albers - 1.62 ERA, 0.85 WHIP

Tell me again how Rizzo can't build a pen

I’m not defending them. But no one uses wins and losses by relievers as a measure of their effectiveness. The Nats bullpen is statistically middle of the pack this year. Same for the hitting and starting pitching. That’s why they are a .500 team. Your stats undoubtedly include games where the pen was effective for several innings and the offense didn’t score. You just make no sense.

I’m not a stat freak which is why I didn’t bother to check those numbers myself. And I had no idea where we would rank with those losses. I thought it’d be worse.

Another stat to verify this line of thinking is to add up blown saves. Now someone go fetch.  :whip:
We have the second fewest blown saves in baseball. We are tied with the Athletics.

Since we're on revisionist history, the Nats would be so much better off if they had taken Mike Trout number 10 in the 2009 MLB draft, and Chris Sale number 1 overall in 2010.

Well there you go! It’s not our bullpen that’s the problem but rather the offense and starters. The games were pretty much lost before the call to the pen was made. I’m glad to help you guys figure this hard stuff out.  :hysterical:

If you look at the stats overall they are middle of the road. Just like the rest of the team. Middling.

This is more accurate.

The bullpen, like the rotation and the lineup was pretty devastated by injuries. The result is that we're middling.

It was the lack of hitting at one point. Then it was the starters. Then it was the pen. Then it was the lack of hitting. Then it was the starters. You get it? The boat kept springing different leaks at different points all season.

Now we’re getting somewhere. How does our team batting average compare to the rest of the league?

they are 6th and 5th in a lot of categories (usually top half of the NL). But they're close to the very bottom in stranded runners.

Already explained. Now be a good lad and dig that up. And while doing that find out how many wins our starters got compared to the rest of the league. We have to get to the bottom of this. ;)

It's DCfan. He's a Trumpster so he lets others do the research, then, if it doesn't confirm his bias, he discounts it and calls it fake news.

If I have to do my own research then what the hell is this board for? I'm certainly not here to hear people's opinions. ;)

Moreover, asking someone else to do research on a point that doesn't respond to the one he's seeking to rebut.  You can't respond to a point about short-term failures by citing a long-term average.   It just doesn't work.

Treinen record as a Nat: 8-11   with a 3.39 ERA and a 1.377

Treinen basically doesn't even look like the same pitcher now.  The A's taught him a cutter, and he's mixing the 2-seamer and 4-seamer well.  Result is you've got 3 fastballs at 3 different speeds and 3 different movement planes.  It gets ugly fast.
