Who does Martinez have at this point who has earned his trust? Maybe four guys: Miller, Suero, Holland and Grace.

Except Suero wasn’t available Tuesday because he’s still feeling the effects of a comebacker off his left hand during Saturday’s game.
“He can’t close the glove,” Martinez said. “He has to be able to defend himself.”

Miller, meanwhile, would’ve been making his third appearance in four days had he pitched Tuesday night. (He did begin warming up as the Nationals were attempting to mount a last-ditch rally in the bottom of the ninth.)

Holland also would have been pitching for the third time in four days. Grace did pitch for the third time in five days (which for him this season constitutes an easy stretch).
“These guys have done a lot for us,” Martinez said. “I want to be careful with these guys, too. Some of these other guys have to go out there and pitch.”

Trouble is, the other guys simply haven’t been able to pitch with any level of consistent effectiveness. Collins melted down during Sunday’s loss, serving up a grand slam to the Brewers’ Christian Yelich. Williams, in only his second major league appearance, gave up three homers during the top of the sixth Tuesday night. And Solís, after loading the bases in the ninth via a walk, a bunt single and a hit batter, left an 0-2 fastball up to Yadier Molina and watched it soar to left field for the grand slam that drove a stake through the Nationals’ heart.

Considering our bullpen has lost us at least 20 games this year if not more and we traded the best closer in baseball away I think we make the playoffs with these 7 guys instead of the garbage we fielded this year. We've brought in probably 30 relievers the past 5 years and our bullpen is the main reason we struggle in the playoffs yet we probably would have been better off with the guys we had.

Every guy we bring in sucks but the guys that leave to pitch on other teams become studs. Why is that??

A. J. Cole may have been benefiting from a change of scenery but has since come back down to earth. Since the All Star break, he's pitching to a 5.24 ERA and given up 5 home runs and 7 walks with only 17 strikeouts.

Stammen is the one that got away, I suppose, but don't forget he was non-tendered after missing most of the season recovering from flexor mass surgery, and that's one that doesn't always turn out great for a pitcher. 

Treinen? Well we weren't going to get Doolittle and Madson for Solis and some AA rando. You have to give a good piece to get a good piece.  I think one of the biggest reasons Treinen is doing so well is because he's got an additional year of experience under his belt. 

Ollie Perez is having a career year but that's a huge stroke of luck for the Indians. My dude has a 15 year resume and only 3 seasons of a sub-3.00 ERA.  2015-2017 he didn't have a year below 4.00.  You thank him for his time as a good Nat and wish him all the best, and never question the decision to let him walk, because this 0.95 year is not who Ollie Perez is.

On the flip side, have a look at what Holland is doing since he came here. And also have a look at the awful, very bad year Albers is having in Milwaukee.  The reason some guys leave here and become studs on other teams is because relief pitchers are volatile.  They have up years and down years. You just hope that you're going to get the Up year and someone else will be stuck with the Down year.

Storen's career didn't end. He's recovering from TJ and while he sucked in Toronto, he seemed to turn things back around and played well for both Seattle and Cincy before his injury.  So maybe next year he'll be on The Ones That Got Away list, rather than the DC Kills Careers list.

I was keeping track of the games the pen lost from the 6th inning on early in the year and I gave up.

If I remember correctly it was at 12 and that was months ago.

26 losses by our relievers by my count whereas the 7 guys on my list have 13 losses.

So theoretically we would have an 87-60 record right now with a 5 game lead on the Braves.

So basically it's not far fetched to say that with a capable bullpen we are probably in the playoffs this year.

These guys came into the games with the game tied or a lead and they blew it. It happened countless times this year.

The starters did their job. The offense did ok in those games but the bullpen was horrendous for the entire year and is arguably the main reason we are not in the playoffs.

I don't know which games you're specifically talking about, but every part of the team has cost the team games this year. The rotation, the offense and the bullpen have all been in shambles at one time or another. To pin it on any one of them is a little silly. There's plenty of blame to go around.

What could have been.

The most dominant closer in baseball. A dependable setup man in Clippard. Two of the leagues best longmen in Stammen and Petit which would have been a godsend with our starters being injured, two very good lefties for situational pitching and Cole to use in mop ups.

Rizzo cannot build a bullpen. That much is clear.

I’m not a stat freak which is why I didn’t bother to check those numbers myself. And I had no idea where we would rank with those losses. I thought it’d be worse.

Another stat to verify this line of thinking is to add up blown saves. Now someone go fetch.
