What are you listening to? (2018)
« on: January 03, 2018, 05:36:45 pm »
2017 is locked.
and 2018 is kicked off with a soundboard recording of "Little Wing" as covered by Derek and the Dominos at Lisner Auditorium in October 1970, one month after Jimi passed.

I know we get sort of an old fogies posting classic youtubes v. young contemporary split here, but this version is fantastic.  Some of Clapton's best guitar work, and the organ (Bobby Whitlock) is amazing.

Kind of on topic:      What's the over/under on how many times Grant and Danny replay all or part of a Kirk Cousins' interview in the course of a week?

You use what you have, I guess. Did he say anything interesting?

Nah.    He's a pretty smart guy.    He isn't barin' anything.    They're havin' a show with him tomorrow between 12 and 2.    While listening to him, I always think he's gonna have an NFL broadcasting career.     He's as good as anyone I've heard doin' network games.     Hate to be a party pooper, and even though their smugness gets on my nerves occasionally, but I like listening to Andy and Tom.    They spread the sport discussions around and cover a lot of turf.

Edit - Apparently, this version is from the Fillmore East concert right after the Lisner Auditorium concert that the fellow who posted it saw.  It is different from the Derek and the Dominoes live version from the same concert because it has a different mix of the vocals, I think.

During the NFL games this past Sunday I had Wagner's Tristan und Isolde on the box (largely for the purpose of drowning out the tiresome telly announcers). Will have to decide just what music of that sort to play opposite this weekend's fixtures.

Might be an urban legend but I heard, one night, he fell backwards off his riser.    Got up.    Dusted himself off.    Got back on the riser and continued on ....

I believe it. Never saw him live but I did see Carl Palmer. The hand is quicker than the eye.

I saw Ginger Baker and Eric Clapton (no Jack Bruce) jam on the back porch (alley) of a leather goods store (owner was friends of the two) in Skokie, Illinois in 1969.

One More From the Road, the 1976 Lynyrd Skynyrd live album from the Fox Theatre.  Whiskey Rock-A-Roller!

I had heard this album before I had heard the studio version of Freebird, so to me this is what I think of when "Freebird" is shouted.

Here Come the Mummies are playing at the Birchmere on June 1. They are a mysterious funk band whose members hide their identities under mummy costumes, allegedly because at least some of them are under contract with other acts and not allowed to play side gigs.  They don’t even allow the venue staff in during sound check. They *bring it* every time they play: loads of talent and just the right amount of gimmick. Many of their songs are heavy on the double entendres. Always a fun time. Definitely worth seeing (even if it is at the godawful Birchmere) and will sell out.

Good funk but no video:

Good funk with video

Took a break from the mundane to walk over to Giant.   Listenin' to Nats' talk on 106.7.    On the way back, I decided to stop in Subway to pick up a sammich for the game tonight.    I walk in and un-bud my ears to talk to the "artist".    This was on the store system (hope it ain't an omen):

BTW   I sat down and listened to the whole thing before I ordered.

It was actually MTV Live.  Didn't know I had that channel or that it existed until now.  Showing Jeff Lynne playing Hyde Park at 6:00.

MTV Live used to be Paladian I think?  They show nothing but live concerts.

Did anyone hear the story of Dire Straits induction at the Rock and Roll HoF?  Mark Knopfler refused to show up, as did his brother.  Three of the original guys did attend but weren't given an inductor so they had to do it themselves.  They also didn't have a musical tribute or get to play.  Just a weird situation.

Last night I went to see The Ukelele Orchestra of Great Britain play at the Strathmore. They always put on a great show, campy but not annoying, and you really haven’t lived till you see an 8-piece ukelele band do a cover of Blur’s Song 2 followed by a mashup of classical, Sinatra, Gloria Gaynor and The wussycat Dolls (yes all of that in one song plus a little more mixed in).

I was listening to XM and they played Blues Traveler "Hook", which like many BT songs, features the incomparable harpoon playing of John Popper.

This caused me to pick up the bag o' harps and try to hang, which is impossible.  So I went instead to youtube and found a series of harp lessons by Popper. Once exhausted, I saw a Richard Thompson link and ultimately found a duet of Nancy Griffith with Thompson on what is (IMO) Thompson's finest song, "Wall of Death".

Perhaps you motorcyclists out there are familiar with what the WOD is;  if not, you should be.
