Except winning is what brings those casual fans to the ball park. DC is a bad sports town but they will always show up for a front runner.

How long do you think the Harper attraction will hold for "casual" fans if he's twice as likely to strike out as to get a hit (which is true for June and July).

For as long as he's amongst the league leaders in homers. Pete Incaviglia, Rob Deer, Rusty Staub - there are tons of examples of sluggers who struck out a lot but still had a devoted following as long as they swatted the long ball.

I hope today was Harper’s last day in a Nationals uniform. Trade him Monday. Call up Robles. Nats improve as a team.

Maybe Cole Hamels and Paps were right? I don't care what he says but he seems unwilling or unable to change his approach at the plate. Not clear if he is just ignoring Kevin Long or if Long is just clueless. But Daddy is not the hitting coach.

I am ambivalent at this point. I know I will want to complain that we should have kept him if he goes 2015 again, but his contract will be huge and we may be reaching time when this franchise needs a new direction.

A reasonable gambit would be to try to re-sign him, and, if successful, trade Eaton. His contract will still be attractive, he will have a half a season to prove himself healthy, and Bryce would occupy RF, Eaton's best position. Leave CF to Robles / Taylor, and LF to Soto.

A better gambit would be to trade Harper, let him revert to MVP form, and sign him in the offseason

and, I have almost, irregardless of talent, started to feel this, but especially so with being so overwhelmingly impressed with Soto, with still loving what I have seen with Robles, and, with still having a genuine feeling that Turner is a potential all-star talent. and, Eaton is Eaton.

Soto's emergence has made Harper less "necessary" to the success of the Nats.

Trading Harper is the prudent move. I don’t see the downside. The Realmuto comment should seal his fate. That's something you would read on a message board. It should never come out of a star players mouth. He’s crippling the offense. Your 3 hitter is typically the best/most consistent hitter on the team. Harper is the opposite. I’m sick of watching him strikeout and look like his dog died every game. A trade is best for both sides. Nats can call up Robles and build around him and Soto. Harper gets a fresh start and can help a world series contender.

I also don’t think trading Harper means Rizzo is punting on this season. If anything, I think it might energize the team. A breath of fresh air. A burden lifted. They could go on a run.

The matter of whether harper does get moved by 16.00 this afternoon is essentially academic...in spirit he has already left the team.
