I think he's hurt but the "lower body injury" also gives him an out for playing with the Russian team.    He said he didn't intend on playing with 'em.    Now's he got an out that covers the NHL  playoffs and the Russian Federation fans.     Damn, that's cynical.     Must be the rain.
In other years he has gone to the world tournament to play for Mother Russia. So I think he may really be hurt.

And the diminshed play throughout the season?
He's been injured. He still scored lots of goals.  Maybe it got worse. Look at how much better John Wall played this year after finally getting his knees cleaned out.

Disclaimer, I'm a Vrana fan and hope he gets more playing time next year.

If the NHL teams were smart they would rest guys during the season. Like the NBA. It's grueling.

Agree.   That way an Ovie can give his body a break and Vrana can get some time in the bigs.   I know VaRK's made the trip and I've been to the arena in Hershey for basketball.    May have to take a road trip next season.

Pretty sure Trotz did that

It really is remarkable how this team can not get past the 2nd round.

Time to blow it up and start over.

How about a new coach and make some trades and just start. No need to tank in the NHL.

If you trade away good players, you will get some decent returns.  Need a new coaching direction.

We'll get a new coach. A couple years down the road. Trotz will be good for mentoring young players, like in Nashville. Get some youth and speed, let them cut their teethfor a couple years, then bring in a guy who can scheme em up

Depends on who they trade and what they get; team is not likely to plummet down the standings.  If you make it in the playoffs in the NHL you have almost as good a chance as the top teams.  Or if the Caps are the top team you have a better chance.  Ottawa and Nashville were not expected to make noise this year but are in the conference finals.  We will see what they do.  Backstrom or Kuznestov would bring the biggest haul. Or maybe Holtby.

List of players to keep long term:
1. Kuzy
2. Schmidt
3. Wilson
4. Orlov

Everyone can be traded and it's really only a matter of when.

Wilson isn't worth keeping.  1st round bust...

Yea. You definitely don't want to sign one of your best players.

Yeah...who needs your top goal scorer and new face of the franchise anyway...

Slate wants them to tank. There must be several once in a generation talents in the 2018 draft.

Sure he is. He'll cost nothing. He actually plays hard.

If you want another second round exit from the playoffs, sure.

If you want to win a cup, burning cap space on a guy who is 30 when you need to be reloading is a bad plan.

Oshie is getting better each year. No evidence he is too old to sign. They will be competitive again in the east next year. Playoffs are a different story. They need to upgrade the defense and get more from the third and fourth lines. A new coach could help.

$2MM isn't nothing for a non-producer...

Reload with what / who?  Filip Forsburg?   :hysterical:

Oshie actually gives them a chance to make the playoffs next year...

First round pick, occasional flashes of whatever, fan favourite...perfect Golden Knight

I like Willie.  But if one of our young Russians is going back to the KHL, someone needs to get offered up.

He's 30. His getting better days are over. You simply hope he could maintain for a couple years and then not decline too much.

Their defense was the best it's ever been and they're about to lose their best defenseman in Alzner. The third and fourth lines were the best they've ever been. That was, literally, the best team the capitals have ever put on the ice. There is no more getting better with this squad.

He produces well enough. Frankly he'd be better if they just converted him to defenseman. He certainly wouldn't be any worse than Carlson or Orpik.

Trade Backstrom, MoJo, Niskenan, & Holtby now, and plan to trade Carlson at the deadline. Eat as much salary as possible and get the best prospects back. Keep Alzner over Oshie.

Management needs to sit down and have an honest coversation with Ovechkin. If he wants to go somewhere else, fine. Trade him. Eat as much salary as possible. If not, he needs to commit fully to conditioning and playing defense. Because he is no longer scoring the 50 goals that cover up his unwillingness to play defense.

Trotz can stay for a couple years to groom all the young talent that we will have, but management needs to be looking to identify someone who can scheme and make adjustments in the fly to take over. Someone who will be able to use the Caps newfound speed to win in the postseason.

Making the playoffs means nothing. Half the NHL makes the freaking playoffs. This team has been making the playoffs for the better part of the last decade. Who cares anymore. We are the butt of jokes in hockey. We're basically Cleveland or the Cubs before 2015. The team reflects its leadership. Its time for that to end. To quote the Bible:

I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other!  So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth. You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked.
