I think it's more than this. I'm willing to bet that they are already disappointed that the MASN issue hasn't been taken care of and now they're trying to stretch their budget as much as possible, to avoid becoming the Mets. Think about it. If the Mets' ownership hadn't freaked up their finances over the past decade, they're probably one of the best teams in the history of baseball right now. They'd have had the money to add an Andrew Miller, David Robertson, Nelson Cruz,  and/or Jason Heyward, all while keeping a Daniel Murphy.

So, yea, maybe they're being cheap, but it may not be out of greed. It might be because they want to avoid royally freaking up their payroll and being unable to make a big push.

I'd assume it's well short of that- only four teams are paying the tax, I don't expect the nats to have the fifth highest payroll

He got the Tigers to the WS, and they were able to dump his contract. I think they would do that again

All by himself?  He had some help of course but had a good season That was a good trade when they were able to flip him to Texas. I am not so sure he would have gotten the Nats to the World Series.

Of course by that logic Tex got the Yanks to the World Series in 2009 ( and they won). So that must have been a good signing also?

I agree. But no one ever knows for sure which moves will result in that championship. Especially in MLB.

"The Blue Jays have told teams that right-handed reliever Drew Storen is available, reports Bob Elliott of the Toronto Sun. Storen, whom the Jays acquired from the Nationals for outfielder Ben Revere in the offseason, is on an $8.38MM salary this year and is then slated to become a free agent. Formerly a capable late-game option with the Nats, Storen has already allowed 13 runs on 22 hits in his first 15 innings with the Jays. To his credit, the 28-year-old has continued his career-long trend of posting quality strikeout and walk rates (9.6 and 2.4 this season, respectively), but PITCHf/x indicates that his velocity is down a couple miles per hour."

Yeah, Storen is done as a reliever. He was never that mentally strong and now he's declining physically, or at least appears to be.

Once Revere gets going and gets that average up to his normal levels(or at least close)this will be another steal of a trade for Rizzo.

How exactly did signing him hurt the tigers? But thank god we didnt do that and forgo all the success the nats had

Giolito, Robles, and the two 1st rd picks for Trout. LAA wouldn't be able to turn that down. Harper-Trout-Murphy middle of lineup
