BTW, aside from the obvious mistakes, Zim should have scored on Murphy's double in G5 IMO.

Isn’t that on Hensley for not sending Zim?

DeRosa was here as a player in 2012.  RZ, Harper, and Stras I think are the only ones still with the team going back to his playing days. Sometimes you want the guy who comes in not to be viewed as a peer, or, in this case, a scrub.  That should not be much of a problem for him (or Cora, who is not coming here).

You think for sure Cora's going to the Sox?

Unless Dombrowski insists on someone else.  He's supposed to be the clear #1 choice.  There's always a chance that, with multiple offers, he prefers DC and being less the focus of the town.

for a first job, I think you want a team that will stick with you. After what happened with Williams (manager of the year and unemployed two years later), if I was DeRosa or Cora, I'd steer well clear of the nats

So. The Nationals didn't stick with Matt Williams?

I wouldn't want a manager who rather take a "safe" job with a losing team rather than taking a chance to manage a team that is likely to make the playoffs.

that's also known as a manager without other options

Not sure what you mean by that?

What I said implies someone is in the running for more than one job.

Selection of a new manager should be soley on in-game management. There are enough veterans on this team to manage the clubhouse through a season. If you're that desperate for someone who can do that, bring back Werth to play LF. He'll get hurt and then you can use him as a bench player.

But you can't go into a new season after you fixed the bullpen exactly how you needed to with a guy who simply won't use the pen. Even Ned Yost wasn't that freaking stupid. Dusty should have been fired after Game 3.

Eric Wedge is still alive?  LOL @ Ron "Those guys over there just did better" Gardenhire getting interviewed with the Red Sux.  Richfield's dive bars won't survive without the Ron-ster parking his Pontiac outside every night.

it means that if you have other options, you're probably choosing a team that sticks with it's managers

Managing the clubhouse is of no importance, but in-game management is not the sole criterion.  How well a manager gets the team prepared, so they don't do stupid things in the game, is high on my list.  Dusty failed at that for the postseason.

Given how large an MLB payroll is, I'm shocked they don't have assistant hitting and pitching coaches who have only game preparation as their jobs.

There are drills that need to take place on a regular basis (not just spring training). Rundowns, backing up, lining up throws and relays, pitcher covering first, and many more.  Sure, assistants can run these drills, but it is the manager who needs to assume overall responsibility to design the program and make sure the drills are run.

No it was on Ryan for over-correcting getting picked off and having no lead off first.

Instead he goes to the Tigers.  What the hell happened to that organization?

They overspent on big contracts and didn’t depleted and didn’t develop their farm system. The tigers are an actual dumpster fire. It makes me laugh when I see people refer to the Nats that way. But I suppose the Nats can get that way if they do what a lot of folks here want them to do: overspend on long contacts and trade away all the good prospects in the name of going “all in.”

No good manager would go to Detroit. They won’t be good for 5 years.

A Boston area reporter tweeted that Cora to the Red Sox is done but won’t be announced until after the playoffs.

this has been in the works for close to 10 years.  They loved him and Cash when they were with the teams and were planting the "future manager" stories about both at the time.

They really are an example of what happens if you "go all in" and don't pull off a championship.  Unfortunately for me, I think Dombo is doing close to the same with the Red Sox, except he had so many chits that he could not spend them all.

Of course the pirates could be the perfect example of not going all in, they got to the playoffs with McCutchen, but never broke through and now they’re back to mediocre.

With a decent payroll and a few good drafts, they shouldn’t be terrible for too long

check the out of town MLB general thread for a discussion of the "super team" phenomenon.  It's going to take a lot to get by the Cubs the way they are set up.  Baseball saw 5 of 6 division winners repeat this year, and the exception was the Astros, who won 2 years ago.  Most of these teams were built (internally through development or through acquired prospects) to contend for multiple years, and it looks like the NYY are following.

the Yankees seem to have gotten lucky, guys like Judge and Sanchez weren't supposed to be this good.

The Nationals have had six straight seasons of teams with enough talent to contend, with two weird seasons that rightfully saw managers canned. By all indications, next year should be the same story. With a couple smart signing and some smart developing of the pitching staff behind Strasburg and Scherzer, that stretch could be extended.

Rizzo has done a good job fielding a franchise that can contend over a period of years. Same as the Caps.

Eventually one of these damn teams will win. I'll still take this over a long period of futility like the Skins, but something is wrong when I am more excited about a Redskins team that might break .500 versus Caps and Nats teams that should steamroll their divisions.
