Just finished the remaining episodes of 'The Corridors Of Power' - unmissable TV, even if it does present a rather bleak appraisal of what happens when American idealism comes up against realpolitik...

(for those who saw the original 2022 film, this is the full-fat eight hour version - all shades of opinion, from total isolationists to total interventionists, are given room to breathe...).

ESPN launching a new site to allow fans to find out where games are streaming, across all sports and streaming services:

I think there is little to no chance competitors allow it. RSNs aside, big streamers overpay for leagues to get viewers into their ecosystems, not watching the game in a frame on espn.com.

The new Shane Gillis Bud Light commercial is pretty good.

If you've seen the show Tires, this is Tires in about two minutes.

Been watching 'The Zelensky Story', which profiles the President of Ukraine. Interesting series.

(It's a BBC production, but will clearly get shown in the US - I would assume PBS).

Who wants this? Why don’t they just broadcast the real one here in the states?

Started watching Tulsa King this week, season 2 just dropped yesterday. We're about 4 episodes into Season 1 and are enjoying it so far. Definitely a different Stallone.

I saw Hacks beat out The Bear last night for best comedy. Anyone watch it? The Bear is my favorite show since Ted Lasso. Haven't seen Hacks yet.

Just started the new season of 'All Creatures Great And Small' over here, this evening. If it follows the usual pattern, then it'll be broadcast in the US, on PBS, in January '25. Small plot teaser - cat lovers will enjoy the first episode... :D

Oh I didn't realize they started a new series for it! How many season has it had so far? Seems like i got something to add to the binge list.

The new series is Season 5 - it'll follow the pattern of previous seasons (six regular episodes plus an extended Christmas special, so seven per season). I believe all episodes from the previous four series are available for catch-up on the PBS player.

Just watched 'Paid In Full - The Battle For Black Music'. An interesting exposition of the history of exploitation of black artists by the music industry. Three one-hour episodes - the third part does become a more general critique of business practices, in the music business, rather than being black specific. An engaging watch.

(It's a BBC / CBC (Canada) co-production but,  with its emphasis on the US music business,  I'd be amazed if it doesn't get shown in the US - I would assume PBS)

One of the contestants on Jeopardy tonight pulled a real-life Cliff Claven. Up by $200 midway through the double jeopardy round, he bet everything on a daily double answer....and didn't know the question. He finished the game with about $1,200 which was good enough for 2nd place as the 3rd contestant finished the round in the red.

The look on his face when he realized he didn't know the question will be a meme tomorrow if not already.

Caught up with the latest 'American Experience' - 'The American VIce President'. An interesting examination of the history, and development, of the office. Astonishing how little thought was given to the VP role, and how much is owed to the 25th Amendment.

Have to say that the latest 'American Exerience' factual - 'American Coup - Wilmington 1898' - is a rather disappointing end to what has been a very strong season (36). The subject matter is important and of interest - while there is much to engage the viewer, it lapses into an approach which has been affecting some UK factuals; approaching the subject in a personal, emotional, 'touchy-feely' way, so there are many contributions from the decendants of those involved at the time. The closing section is weak, as it veers perilously close to campaigning, especially with regard to financial reparations.

Don't get me wrong - it's informative, and worth a watch. It's just 'bread-and-butter' AE rather than great AE.

Watched the new Wallace & Gromit - 'Vengeance Most Fowl'. Absolutely stunning - superb!  Even if you can't roll with the story, just sit back and marvel at the quality of the animation.

(Premiered on BBC / iPlayer, today - rest of world on Netflix, tomorrow 12/26)

Finished A Man on the Inside last night. Tough to watch at times given the context of it taking place in an assisted living community and Ted Danson ‘s character having just lost his wife to Alzheimer’s. But, brilliantly acted and written. Lead writer is Michael Schur of The Office and Parks and Rec fame.

Must see - this clip from Man From U.N.C.L.E., aired in 1964.  My daughter talked me into watching these with her, one episode a night after dinner.  All the full episodes are available free on Internet Archives, no ads.

Astonishing special appearances in this episode 9 from actors unknown at the time, but who would go on to great fame.

If anyone is interested in the full seasons, here it is.

Very cool. Always fun watching some of the older shows to see the actors who went on to bigger and better things. MASH features a lot of first time appearances (Patrick Swayze IIRC for one, John Ritter too).

Sergeant Schultz (John Banner) also makes an appearance in an episode.  As we've gotten past episode 20 I haven't been recognizing very many, they seemed to be stacked in the early episodes.  Odd, as Man from U.N.C.L.E. predates most of those other shows.

We're starting to see repeat buildings and other sets.  Still, it's cleverly done, fun to try to figure out the inevitable twists and turns in the plot as clues are revealed.

Really enjoying the Churchill documentary series on Netflix.
