Mid season conditioning? What? He's a reliever. He can't throw his breaking ball for strikes and his fastball isn't sinking.

If he were hurt, they would DL him. It would solve the Nationals problem because they could DL him for two to three weeks, then give him two weeks of bullpen sessions and rehab games, effectively working on his preperation in the pen. A DL stint would literally be a gift the Nationals are looking for as it would sove all their problems. The fact that they haven't put him on the DL and no one is reporting that he's getting treatment shows that he isn't hurt. He simply sucks.

I don't disagree he sucks.  I don't think it has anything to do with him being a reliever though.  You keep saying he was fine in spring training, but really he was awful in his starts in spring training and leads me to believe he just doesn't have it right now whether he is starting or relieving.

I do think his back injury is probably a significant factor, and he may get better, or may never be the same pitcher.

Haren wasn't actually injured. Blue is maintaining that Detwiler is still suffering back issues.

No I'm maintaining that he has pitched like crap since he injured his back. That his role has little to nothing to do with it. He didn't show anything in ST 11IP 17H 4BB 8K and lost his starters gig.

He started three games in ST. The last start was 3.2 innings, gave up 3 hits and one walk. Clearly an improvement. He made four more relief appearances and only had one bad outing. His last two relief appearances, he threw 9 pitches (all strikes) and gave up one hit. I'm not buying the he's still hurt stuff. Quite frankly, if you're still hurting months after surgery, you aren't ready to play.  In fact, that's grounds for malpractice suit. What your suggesting is that 9 months after he knew he had a serious back injury, he's still experiencing the pain involved with that injury and one of the following three things is happening:

1. Detwiler is heads and shoulder the greatest at tolerating pain and not showing it.
2. A doctor knows about his condition and has not told him the implications of continuing to play. This is grounds for revoking a medical license and suing the everliving crap out of a doctor.
3. Detwiler knows the implications of continuing to play and is choosing to.

I find all of these incredibly doubtful. The only logical conclusion I can come to is that Detwiler is not injured.

He sucks. He knows he sucks. He doesn't want to be a reliever and he doesn't know how. Either give him a start, evaluate him from that, or DFA him. Treinen certainly hasn't shown that he's any better than what Detwiler can be as a starter.

I offer a fourth possibility.  His unusual anatomy may be the source. Perhaps a surgery mixup?

In all seriousness, I agree with you Slate. He's not injured. It's emotional. He's pissed off, doesn't trust his stuff, nibbling too much and then grooving it.  He needs time in the minors to get regular starts where the stats won't matter to work it out.  I say DFA and if another team claims him, so be it.

Look, just start him. What's the worst that can happen, he sucks? If the other team can put up two or more runs, they're going to win.

If they were going to do it, they would have done it already.

They haven't done it. You might do it. I wouldn't do it, because Detwiler doesn't have it this year.

Davey probably would have done it.

Then just release him. There is no way he gets tindered next year, just end this sooner rather than dragging it out

Don't reward a player for pouting. Just DFA his ass.

Need to see if we're sellers at the trade deadline.  He could be the throw in that makes a trade possible

I think Det has been passed over as an option as a starter by several other guys. I don't think he gets close to the rotation ever again.

Well here's what I would do. Start him, and pull him once through the order. Then put in another starter. Just don't tell him the plan.  He'll be happy that he's starting, so he'll pitch three perfect innings, and won't have to face a batter the second time.    That'll only work once though.

Which is why I'm advocating starting him. Give Gio some extra time, keep Treinen down in Triple A to work on his secondary pitches.

Detwiler's 4 IP was longer than two of his 2013 starting appearances

Detwiler is at the very peak of his value after last night. Trade him, TODAY!

After last night's performance he should be pretty fired up. Treinen when he's started has been pretty good but isn't quite to what he could be. Start Detwiler for the doubleheader and see what he can do, let Treinen pitch out of the bullpen. Or call up Cedeno instead.

I'd rather keep him if he'd get his head right.  And last night seemed to be pretty right.

Taylor Hill has been called up to start one of the games.

I was under the assumption that he would be pitching out of the bullpen for the next few days and Treinen would start Saturday.

Treinen last pitched June 22. He's starting Saturday.

I guess that's possible.  So they are promoting Hill now for the 'pen AND going to call up Treinen for just the Saturday start?

Start Detwiler for the doubleheader

He's still a once-through-the-order guy.  Four innings was pushing it.

(Actually, I was long asleep by the time he came in. Was he throwing any offspeed pitches with any regularity/success?)

i'll say it again, thinking, simply, that 'detwiler' is a starter, and it's this that has mostly contributed to his shaky role as a bullpen arm.  I wonder if anyone needing, and actively looking, for a starter, can see any worth in him?
