i was under the impression that a team could not trade draft picks (in mlb).  Why were Marlins/Pirates able to trade including the #39 overall pick?

MLB allows teams to trade compensatory picks and the bonus pools associated with them, a new feature of the current Collective Bargaining Agreement. Previously, teams were not allowed to trade draft picks.

Whom will the Nationals get at 18, a pick that should come around 8:30 p.m.? Based on rumblings, three players appear to have the best chance of landing with the Nationals.

RHP Erick Fedde, UNLV: Fedde is a Scott Boras client and had Tommy John surgery in May. Doesn’t that just sound like a Nationals draft pick? Fedde, a 6-foot-4 flamethrower, likely would have been taken in the top 10 if not for undergoing the elbow ligament-replacement surgery this season. The Nationals haven’t shied from Boras clients in the past, and they’ve had luck rehabbing pitchers from Tommy John surgery. Before his injury, Fedde went 8-2 with a 1.76 ERA and was named Mountain West pitcher of the year, an honor that once went to San Diego State right-hander Stephen Strasburg.

1B Casey Gillaspie, Wichita State: The brother of big leaguer Conor Gillaspie has been compared to Lance Berkman and Mark Teixeira. Like those two, he’s a switch hitter. Gillaspie bashed 15 homers and slugged .682 this year. He’s 6-foot-4, 238 pounds. In his senior year of high school, Gillaspie hit .515. MLB.com’s Jim Callis, the best mock drafter in the business, predicted the Nationals will take Gillaspie.

1B A.J. Reed, Kentucky: A finalist for the Golden Spikes award, Reed led the NCAA in homers with 23 and slugged .735 with a .476 OPS this season. Reed also pitched for the Wildcats, punching up a 2.09 ERA and led the SEC with 12 wins. But he’ll be drafted for his vicious bat. He’s 6-foot-4, 220 pounds, the prototypical frame for a power hitter.

Don't want Fedde. 6' 4", 170. Not a good pitcher's frame.

Just look at the top 2 picks. Aiken 6' 3", 210. Rodon 6' 3", 235.

Guys I'm liking for the Nats:

HS SS Jacob Gatewood - Serious pop, looks like a big leaguer (6' 5"). May not stick at SS but should be able to play 3B. Strong arm.

College 1B Casey Gillaspie - Switch hitter, 30 HR pop, good plate approach. Solid at first base.

HS OF Derek Hill - Absurd speed, great defensive OFer, can stick in CF. Looks like a decent hitter, maybe not a ton of pop but he has some room to grow.

College SP Tyler Beede - High 90s fastball, good pitcher's frame 6' 4", 215. Has been picked in the first round before (Toronto) out of HS. Clearly has the stuff. Command needs work but if he figures it out this is an ace.

Really intrigued by Gatewood. I know there are some questions about the swing and miss but there was question with Mike Stanton as well. Not saying hes the next Stanton but hes got big time power and room for even more with his frame. Has the athleticism to possibly stay at short but clearly the body, athleticism and powet to play third or OF.

I like what Gillaspie and Reed bring at first but im not sure we need a first baseman in the first. Zimmerman probably moves there next year at the big league level. Although Skole has fallen on tough times this year hes around and Drew Ward could fit there long term. Maybe even Werth as he gets older. Point being, there are options at 1b.

Im not sure why you'd be down on Fedde's frame. Cole is pretty darn close, and of course, Sale was already mentioned. Hes a good athlete which is more important than having an extra 20lbs imo. Id be good with Fedde although Id take Hoffman first if he fell. Beede needs some work but has legitimate ability and upside. Freeland may be gone but he'd another college arm worth it.

If Schwarber can stick behind the plate, hes a good pickup. Pentecost if he falls.

We should be able to add a big piece today. I probably lean towards Gatewood and Fedde based on upside, but Freeland and Beede add talent as well.

Yeah Gatewood is my top choice. Would instantly be a top 5 prospect in our system.
