Interesting series of tweets from Rosenthal summarized...

Would #Nationals trade Jordan Zimmermann? They twice have tried to extend him. Like #Rays’ Price, he has two years of club control left. So…I asked #Nationals GM Mike Rizzo, who said, “We’d certainly love to get something done with him. But like any premium guy on your team, if there is something that can’t be done, then you would think about a trade. But that’s the furthest thing from our minds.”

I'm guessing they threw an extension similar to Gio's out there and they said no.  I really hope they can work something out.

we could get an ass load for him

Still no lineup upgrade.  I'm telling you now, we make no moves here we can look forward to a 2013 repeat.  Better overal due to pitching and bench upgrades, but maybe low 90s in wins and not enough to best, the Braves.

If you make the assumption that everyone performs at the exact same level then you're correct.  You can't understate how much our bench hurt us last year.  It was a huge problem.

From Boz's article today...

Quote
The savvy Braves had the best ’13 bench, batting .263 and slugging .406. Next came the Marlins (.235, .334), the Mets (.222, 337), the Phils (.204, .364) and finally the putrid Nats (.209, .284).

How many wins was that right there?

I personally think we'll see an improvement in enough guys that we'll be better offensively.

Span - I think he'll be a bit better overall offensively.  I'm guessing his OBP gets closer to his career numbers.
Harper - We all know he was injured.  I think we'll see an upgrade here as well.
Zimmerman - I think his offensive numbers will be about the same but we'll see the throwing errors drop due to him being healthy.
Werth - I think we'll see a drop in his numbers.
Desmond - He was better offensively in 12' than 13'.  I think we'll see similar numbers.
Rendon - I think he'll be better but just marginally.
Ramos - His OBP was terrible last year.  Not sure what to expect but probably similar numbers.

Overall, I would project our offense to be better with typical increase from the young guys in Harper & Rendon and Span returning to more typical levels.  A dropoff from Werth would still net an increase in offensive production.

Add to that a healthier Zim at 3B where we saw his throwing errors drop later in the year, a healthy Harper, Fister and a more balanced bullpen and I think we could see a bigger jump than 4-6 games.

Add to that the Braves lost McCann & Hudson and I think it's a tossup for the division title.

Just my opinions.

My long shot hope is Choo and move Span. Choo is a pure lead off hitter and has much better power then Span.

Wins in the low 90s will be good enough for the playoffs. I wouldn't call that a repeat of last season.

It's my favorite distro. I just set it as my avatar since I had no idea what else to put there after my avatar bet with Spider was done.

Who would you rather have in CF, Span or Brett Gardener?

Gardner for one year, but Span considering he comes with an extra year. CF isn't a position I want to have with no internal option and be forced to spend a ton of money on flawed guys like Bourn or Upton. It's hard to find a cheapish stopgap in CF.

Also, now that the Mariners have about 10 first basemen, I hope Rizzo takes a flier on Justin Smoak. I could see him being the next Chris Davis.

It looks like Eury Perez has one more option year.  He was added to the roster prior to the 2011 rule 5 draft, optioned down to Harrisburg the next spring, and first appeared for the nationals in 9/12.  My best guess is he is he could fill in if Span is put on the disabled list in 2014 or be a call up if they decide to go with McLouth and Hairston in the event of an injury. Goodwin would be the potential Span replacement in 2015 or 2016.  It is nice to have some reasonable internally-developed options for replacements, but not to be dependent on them.

The only question that remains is what are we doing with Laroche?

Ooof. That sucks. Lets see if the White Sox can keep him on their roster all season. With Flowers there, could he actually START?

He was raking in the Carolina League last year, but it's a pretty big jump to the majors.

Skole would have to rake.

I think Zimmerman will move, giving Rendon, and letting a resurgent Danny Espinosa play second base full time.

when healthy, that's what he tends to do

But the White Sox catchers last year batted .196/.238/.325 which is SOOOOO awful that even a high-A catcher can probably equal it. I would think that if the pitching staff can deal with him he might actually stick there.

He's 25 and will be in Double A. Let's not pretend he's a great hitter. High strikeout rates, nice walk rates, nice power. At best, he's Dunn.

Dunn was a pretty good hitter- peaked at 4.9 WAR, around 3 WAR in his prime.

Nationals Designate Corey Brown For Assignment

By Steve Adams [December 12, 2013 at 3:13pm CST]

The Nationals announced that they have designated outfielder Corey Brown for assignment to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Nate McLouth.

Brown, 28, is a career .175/.250/.400 batter in 45 Major League plate appearances. At the Triple-A level, he's slashed .254/333/.461 in 1602 career plate appearances. Brown and right-hander Henry Rodriguez were acquired by the Nationals in the 2010 trade that sent Josh Willingham to Oakland. The A's took him in the supplemental round of the 2007 draft as compensation for the los of Frank Thomas.

Still bitter about Josh Wilingham.
