Johnson is toast. I saw him pitch several times for Toronto and he looked like crap. Pass.

If we have to move Rendon to get Scherzer I'm not about it.

I would do it if Espinosa rebounds a bit and hits eighth. . 240/.310/.400 out of the eight hole with 15 bombs and stellar defense works for me.  Rendon is a stud, but Scherzer is elite.  I'd rather trade and sign Exhorted and deal Jordan Zimmermann next season.  Having Stras, Gio and Scherzer for a few years is an amazing thought.

Espinosa cannot hit 8th. Too much of a free swinger. Not saying he should hit 2nd, but in front of the pitcher is setting him up for failure.

espinosa cant hit in the major leagues. if scherzer gets traded it is this offseason. so we would have to trade rendon and hope espinosa is a major league player. keep rendon, forget scherzer

I would hate to give up a career of Rendon for a year of Scherzer and a compensatory draft pick.  Scherzer will require a market rate contract to extend. At least we have a bit of leverage with JZ.

I'd happily trade the unknown for the known. Give me Max!

Who is to say they wouldn't sign Cano afterwards?  :D

is the idea rendon, storen(why wouldnt they ask for clippard?), and another (good)pitching prospect? i too would pass on that. give JZimm his deal, which would be less than Scherzer's(who would be turning 31 in the first season of his extension), and have a younger guy who everyone seems to like. Compare Zimm's 25-27 years to Scherzer's. Jordan is two years younger. Give him his extension, freak Scherzer and his one elite year.

edit: storen is 27 next year not really a "young guy" with "loads of upside" anymore, especially when clippard is probably preferable to a team that wants to win now

I would offer Purke,Kobernus and Nieto. Take it or leave it then move on.

I think we're all assuming the deal would have Rendon in it. May as well see how it all progresses first.

Agreed. We would have a huge hole at second base. Plus it leaves us without a third baseman when Mr. Glass has to be moved to first.

I don't want to give up on Rendon. He's gonna be a real smooth ~.300 hitting 2B and I think his D improved as the season went on. I'm not giving up on that for a P when we already have three really good young Ps and two of them will also need big contracts soon.

Never forget:

Quote from: Baseball Prospectus
But what about the big trade for Alfonso Soriano? Simply put, that deal looks like a disaster for Washington. Soriano's home/road splits the last two years in Texas have been gruesome, and PECOTA reflects the effect of moving from the hotbox in Arlington to expansive RFK Stadium, projecting a line of .259/.312/.466 with 26 home runs, a drop of 43 points in OPS and 10 home runs from last year. Brad Wilkerson is projected to hit .263/.362/.473 with 24 home runs in Texas, and will make $3.9 million this year, whereas Soriano asked for $12 million in arbitration, with the Nationals offering $10 million. A year younger than Soriano, Wilkerson is the better player, capable of hitting 30 home runs, drawing 100 walks, and playing plus defense in the corners and in center.

And Soriano got 20 assists. What a year he had.

Oh so Ken Rosenthal tweets about us being linked to Scherzer and Price? I guess we're not getting them.

lol, I would be so furious if we traded Rendon for Scherzer. The idea just seems preposterous.

Anyone that trades for Max has to lock him up long term.  If a GM trades a ton of prospects and he walks after next year that GM should be crap canned.

that gives Boras a lot of leverage- any GM who puts Boras in that position is asking for trouble

I don't know how it works but I'm assuming that if, for example, the Nats and Tigers come to terms that are acceptable to both teams Rizzo would be able to speak with Max about a long term deal before finalizing the trade, right?

they could agree to a window, but you can't force a player to sign. The tigers are going to demand a decent return, paying a decent return, and then turning around and paying Max enough to keep him from testing his value seems like a bad idea
