Especially for $14 million.
$21 million.

I think we established in earlier discussion that his contract is 7M each 2013 and 2014, with an additional 14M deferred. So we still owe him 21M.   If we could unload him (along with the 21M) for nothing in  return, it would be a good deal.

Bleacher Report assesses our needs:

They say we should get Cano, Ervin Santanna or Matt Garza and Oliver Perez, and trade LaRoche (moving Zimmerman to 1st).

There are reports that the Tigers will look to trade Max Scherzer this offseason. Simply don't have the money to sign him long term.

Storen + Rendon + Prospect or two for Scherzer. Trade Zimmermann for bullpen help. Sign O' Flaherty. Pray Espinosa can OPS .700

uh, no.  Gonna need a bunch more than that to move him.
Sign O' Flaherty.
Maybe, but he's coming off TJ and I'm not sure you want a guy that fresh off the procedure to get that role.

Find, trade JZ for whatever. Dont really care, I'm unimpressed with his second half splits. Alternative we could maybe get a middle infielder out of him. Wonder if the Cards would part with Wong. . . .

I don't care about O'Flaherty's TJS. z Its a standard surgery. Over a third of pitchers have had it at this point.  We get him on a one year deal and we're set in the pen. Clippard closes, O'Flaherty sets up. We get Wong and another reliever from the Cards and we're set.

I get that it's a standard surgery, but he'll be less than a year removed and pitchers don't usually regain their form for a full 18 months, as I understand it.

JZim's a guy that's going into the top of almost every rotation, you better get something big time back for that if you're going to move him.  Unless it's clear you can't extend him, a middling middle infielder or reliever's not going to cut it.

Pretty sure we had two guys recover in less than 12 months. We'd have him NLT June 1.

Wong is more than a middling middle infielder. Dude has Dustin Pedroia written all over him. And the Cards have lots of talented, young relievers.

If he he can turn into a Dustin Pedroia, I'd probably have to listen to that.

And I know guys get back on the mound in 12 months, but, I'm assuming your talking about JZ and Stras, both of them didn't come out guns a blazing right out of the gate.  It took them a while to get their sea legs back.  We saw flashes of it, but it wasn't until the next season we saw them get closer to what we expected of them.  If O'flaherty is someone we can buy low on, then let's do it, but I wouldn't do it with the expectation that he can take a major role right out of the gate.

I wonder if the mets will grab him as he's a local boy.

Good news for us as the marlins were high on him.

I guess this marks the end of Paul Konerko in Chicago. Kinda sad.

Sign Napoli.

I think he would benefit moving to the NL in hitting.  Also if that means the Nats could get Price, I'm for it.

Why would the Sawks let him leave? They can afford to keep him.

I thought he's a FA after this year.

The Red Sox reduced Napoli to a one year deal.  They could always bring him back, but he is a FA again so he doesn't necessarily have to return to the Red Sox.

I know he's a FA. My question is why would the Sawks not match any offer he gets? He has been very good for them and I don't know of any internal replacements for him right off hand.

Well LaRoche may be available for cheap...
