I don't care if laroche rides the bench or gets traded for nothing, I just want a slugging firstbaseman

Morse is gone dude, you need to move on.

Just making a joke.  Everyone tells me to move on about Morse.  I thought it'd be funny to turn the tables!

Ellsbury is interesting, but with the year he is having, I'm thinking it would take a Werth 2.0 AAV and length of contract to land him.  Choo is more power and OBP (I think), but less defensively.  he's probably cheaper and may be a better fit.

Who knows what the president of baseball will be able to do, but they need to REBUILD around Harper, Ramos, Rendon and Desmond.  They are really tied down by two big contracts, so are stuck with Werth and Zimmerman.  Need som big FAs.

Starting pitching shouldn't be too hard to refine, but bullpen needs BIG attention.
What have they got?  Soriano, Clippard, maybe Krol.  Serious attention.

Lombo is all we have worth keeping on the bench.  More serious re-tooling.

This team is not a "tickering and we're there"...it's a project waiting for MAJOR change...and the sad thing is, there isn't anything waiting in the high minors to help much, other than Karns and Jordan, who haven't shown a whole lot.  Depressing picture, Mr. President of Baseball Operations.

Rendon is going to be a key, but he is still a development project.   I'm not sure we are going to see much power long term from him.  He kind of needs to play 2d for this team and another guy needs to be added as a corner infielder (with RZ on the opposite corner).

if he can become an OBP machine (which was the hope when he was drafted), a sprinkling of power (say 15 hrs per year) is more than enough

If it were me in Rizzo's shoes, I'd address only a few things, yet big things.

Number 1 - 1st Base.  Adam LaRoche in his two and two thirds tenure here has been hurt, then amazing and then slumpy and inconsistent.  I think he is "done" and even a severe uptick next year doesn't bode well for the club long term.  I look into "my" farm system and see that I have Tyler Moore, Chris Marrero and Matt Skole.  What do "we" really have with Tyler Moore?  Is he a potential starter at 1B with good power numbers but a bad OBP and AVG?  Is he only a bench guy?  Is he just AAAA filler?  Are Chris Marrero or Matt Skole MLB ready and are they any better than Moore?  "My" scout's eye is only sold on Moore being a bench guy right now and the other two options are non-factors at this point.  Marrero probably is a never will be and Skole is too old for his level in the minors and is too injury prone.

Solution - Kendrys Morales on a three year deal (through age 33) for about 15 Mil a year.  I go with "my" gut that Zimmerman turns it around at 3B defensively and "I" can sign a middle of the order bat to drive in runs.  "I" ship LaRoche out to any team willing to take on a modicum of his salary next year.

Number 2 - Rotation.  Haren is gone.  Assuming all four of "my" main starters can come back healthy the following season, I look at my options in house and on the trade or free agent market.  Garza, Kuroda, Hughes and Ervin Santana are all free agents.  Price and maybe Samardzija are available by trade.  My system has Lucas Giolito, Taylor Jordan, Nathan Karns, A.J. Cole, Robbie Ray, Tanner Roark, Sammy Solis and Matt Purke as names that someone in another organization has actually heard of.  I see the FA market as Kuroda as a number 2, Garza as a 3/4 and Santana and Hughes as back end pieces.  I probably don't want to get into bidding wars for one or two years on Kuroda, and I'm not inclined to go more than three years on Garza.  The other two FA pitchers worth mentioning are likely worse than a combination of Jordan and Karns.  I then try to trade a package to get either of Price or Samardzija, and with a lack of hitting prospects in the system, I probably get shot down.

Solution - Karns or Taylor Jordan battle out the last spot.

Number 3 - Bullpen arms.  Bullpen arms tend to vary year to year.  I'm more inclined to stand put or add a relatively complimentary piece.

Solution - Soriano, Storen, Clippard, Krol, Mattheus, Stammen.  Acquire Eric O'Flaherty on a two year deal worth 5 a year.

He said Morales not Morse.  Sheesh you see Morse even when he's not there

Edit: or did you throw Morse in there when he said slugging 1b?

I don't understand the attraction with Samardzija other than he could become available, and we need another pitcher.

Lombo?

His career OPS+ is 29% worse than League average. I know some guys like him because he's a "gamer" - but he's really just a scrub.

Who replaces Zimm at 3B in your scenario?

Rendon

We tell Espinosa, now, that he either gets the surgery, or he stays in Triple A/on the bench. If we can get even 2012 Espinosa back, it's enough.

He's a good pitcher. We need one after our big three and I don't really think Detwiler is the guy.

If Morse comes back and rakes, I'm not opposed to signing him in the offseason.

Not really...I don't see him as anything more than an innings eater.  Plenty of guys can do that...

What innings eater is out there that posts his numbers? 9+ k/9, sub 4 ERA, 3.57 FIP, about to post back to back 3 WAR seasons. Oh and still young and under team control for a while. Who is looking to trade that right now? Yea, the Cubs.

I dunno, let's make something happen. We have Laroche, Storen, and Span that we can trade for prospects. Package them together with a guy like Karns and ship them to a team that's desperately trying to build a farm system that has talent at the Single A and Double A level

So the 5 guys you are keeping would be Stephen Strasburg, Gio Gonzalez, Jordan Zimmermann, Bryce Harper, and Ryan Zimmerman?  I can think of a few more I'd keep.  Just saying.

I would keep the three starting pitchers
Zim, Gio and Stras
I would keep
Abad and Clippard
I would keep
Harper, Zim and Werth

The rest can all be traded, released or what ever. Replace them with the AAA guys and see if we have anything. If we are going to score 1 run a game then we dont need the other bums

I think it's borderline insane to not have Desi and Rendon on that list.
