Careful, I've heard the means something totally different to Werth.  Not that there's anything wrong with that.

That's a pretty big if though. He's had health issues which don't tend to get better with age. It also took him having the best offensive season of his career to reach 4.5 WAR.

You say a couple years of 4.5+ and then another couple of ~3.5. That would have him playing at an all-star level or close to it for the rest of his time here. Personally, I don't see him reaching 4.5 WAR again. I think the only way the contract ends up not looking as bad is through contract inflation.

Mostly I don't disagree.  If he follows a path of decline of a half a win a year, something like 4 - 3.5 - 3 - 2.5, then it really does come down to inflation.  Health will be huge.  I'm more or less hoping for a D. Evans-like career path (Darrell or Dwight).  This could also blow up with health, too.  I just don't see his healthy offense being as bad a s 2011 again.

I would be quite happy  with that kind of decline. As everyone always says, it's not my money and he would still be a contributing player at those levels even in his last years here. I too think 2011 was an aberration that we hopefully won't have to see again barring injury.

werth turned out to be a great signing almost makes up for Zimmerman's extension

Absolutely agree.  He brought a sense of professionalism and a lack of tolerance for teammates half-assing it.  I remember a story about him tearing into Nyjer Morgan when Morgan only did half the assigned exercises in ST and called it a day.

Of players on the field, yeah, Jayson Werth is turning out to be a way better signing than even the biggest Nats fan could have expected after those grim first few months he played for us.
