Meh, Skippy and I have been saying this is not the year. Basically, the entire middle of the defense is on the IR, and that includes the best run-stopping LB, a pro bowl LB who could cover, one of the best tackles in the game, and a decent run stopper.  Once the camel's back breaks, it doesn't matter how many straws you pile on it.

It will be interesting to see how they compensate. Fletcher has been playing a lot, and I'm thinking maybe Ninkovich plays more like a LB.

various outlets are reporting the Lions job is Wisenhut's, just have to wait until SD is done.

BTW, the last 4 SB winners have all played the Eagles in Philly's home opener.  This year, the Eagles played the Chargers in their HO.

I remember when the NFL schedule was coming out and it was leaked that the Redskins would open against Philadelphia people around here were scrambling to find out if it was going to be played here in Washington or in philly because if it was in philly that stupid anomaly indicated the Redskins had a shot at winning the SB.

And the last 3 SB champs have lost to the Redskins during the regular season, which the Chargers have done.

By the way, haven't read the thread for last night's game, but I'll say the Pats got a couple of gift calls - the interference Edelman drew before what think was the first score of the 2d half and the Vellano trip of Luck.  The latter did not matter as much as the first because of the Collins pick right afterwards.

I liked the offense.  Looked good except at tight end.  On D, Collins and Ryan are two nice rookies, and Siliga is a good guy for the Pats system.

A few in the predictions thread, and no comment on Blount JCA? He was a flippin' beast!

I thought Blount was this year's version of Antwain Smith, but he's doing more for them than even Corey Dillon.  I thought the weakness in the Pats offense during the period from Dillon's decline to this year was the lack of a run attack that could effectively kill the clock when the Pats led in the 4th quarter.  That really bit them in the behind in the 2 Giants super bowl losses and even in the '06 loss to the Colts.  That's why I enjoyed the long 4th quarter drive maybe more than Blount's long run replying to the 3 play, 2 bomb drive by the Colts to make it a 1 touchdown game.

I love the balance now.  I think it makes Amendola, Collie, Thompkins, etc... much more effective since the defenses cannot key on them, control Edelman, and watch the run at the same time.   I think Amendola's bomb was off play action, right after the first 3 and out at the start of the 2d half.  Of course everyone had to bite on the play action at that point.

The part of Blount's long run I enjoyed the most were the 3 blocks by Mankins, Hoomanawanui, and I think Cannon opening up the hole.  Despite all the injuries earlier in the year, it looks like the line is about as healthy as its been all year.  Cannon is close to Voelmer so it is not a huge step down, and the left side is beastly.

and even in the '06 loss to the Colts.

This is the game where that cost them the most. It probably cost them a SB title. Imagine what they would be like if they had Gronkowski or/and Hernandez.

The worst call I ever saw took place in the bowl game between Minnesota and Syracuse. They called a player down by contact when the player was still in mid stride.  :lmao:  I'm sure the replay official looked at the replay and said :wtf:

by the way, spider, I'm seeing more contact not called interference than I thought the rules allowed. This goes back to the one call where I thought it was interference on a Pats receiver and you said it wasn't. Browns?

Yeah it was against Cleveland. I don't mind them letting the defense play a little bit as long as it isn't over the top and as long as they are consistent and don't favor one team.

Dropping gift wrapped interceptions is a sure way to lose a game against Manning.

Inexcusable breakdowns by SD's defense.
