No, but they've had a couple more weeks than everyone else

(Kubiak had a bad year and PSU had a lot of down time since the bowl season started.)

Cutler signs a 5 7 year extension with the Bears.  Would love to know what the Bears management is smoking.

They probably made this decision after visiting Colorado yesterday.

He is well suited for the Tressman system, so I guess Tressman is set for the next 7 years as well...

I actually think this was an excellent move...though I haven't hear the figures other than maybe $18MM/yr over the first 3 years.

cutler is a good QB, the length of the deal helps with the salary cap, so its not like he's guaranteed to be there or killing the cap in 2018-2020

getting a good QB is really hard to do and trying to draft one better than cutler is a crapshoot so this is a really good signing

Name a QB they could sign or draft this year that gives them a better chance.

If I'm not mistaken, it's a 5 year extension which equals a 7 year contract. I could be wrong though.

there are probably a few when you factor in the cap space. The problem is, it's a crapshoot trying to identify them and guessing wrong puts you in a loop that you can't escape until you choose correctly.

it is a 5 year extension on top of the remaining two years.  It just seems like a long deal for a guy who's never led anyone anywhere.  Granted he had a good year this year, but he also missed a good chunk of the season again and got out-played by his backup.

no it's not, he was a FA after this year

The deal announced by the club — financial terms were not disclosed — locks up the strong-armed passer who would have been the most coveted quarterback in free agency had he hit the market after the season.

are there really, though?

other FA qbs: vick, henne, freeman, grossman...a lot of crap out there. i'd rather just lock up cutler than reach and draft a 1st round QB or 2nd round QB who actually should go in the 3rd (since once QBs start getting picked, everyone reaches on them)

Yup... I don't know why I had it in my head that it was an extension.

so your saying that there will be no QBs drafted after chicago's pick who outperform cutler?

I think that is very fair to say...at least short term...1-3 years...

is it worth taking that chance? you have to figure that guy will need 1-2 years development to get to cutler's level, and if you think your window of competing with the current roster is limited (i.e., the next 3-4 years), im cool with re-signing the solid QB you have now over rolling the dice and hoping that a draft pick can out-perform him in 2-3 years (expecting any rookie QB to come in and be really good is there too, but it happens so rarely)

I said it was a crap shoot, and probably not worth it, I just think there likely will be a couple of players who end up coming out of the draft and playing better than cutler

ah ok, yeah there will be. but betting on being able to get that kind of performance immediately and for the next couple years is a risky move, unless you have a guy scouts are saying is guaranteed to be some beast and you can get him at a certain spot etc. even then it's unlikely.

No one within the range of Chicago's pick and St. Louis will get better offers to trade down than Chicago could have offered.
