Rizzo has always said that he wants a team that can pitch and play defense and having a below average OF defense does not mesh with that line of thinking.

Rizzo also talks about beefcakes, payroll relief, and "inventory".

Isn't the plan right now to trot Morse out there?

The plan for now is to trot Morse to LF but I was hoping he would move him to him to 1B as soon as Harper is ready. And do whatever with LaRoche.

Morse is a below aveage LF and an above average 1B, IMO.

Nothing happens to LaRoche unless it's for "Payroll Relief"®.

Just because we have a weak defender at one (or some) position(s), doesn't mean we have to have one at multiple (or all) positions.

How does swapping LaRoche for Prince make our defense weaker? I was just questioning Rizzo's love of defense if he plans on putting Morse in left (which is going to happen with or without prince)

Still don't want to sign him for more than six years. And if he's signed, then Morse better find a real estate agent because Harper will have his job real soon. And, no, they are not playing Harper or Werth in CF long term. An OF of Morse, Werth, Harper would be a defensive liability.

I basically agree, though I'd think about keeping Morse for the whole year.  He'd likely be better in 2012 than Harper would be.  We can always trade Morse after the season if need be.

I don't really see why Harper couldn't play CF, besides the experience factor. The dude has great speed and a great arm. Let him play all the outfield positions in ST and see if he can do it. For as much as Werth is making he should be delighted to play catcher if we want him to.

Even great defensive teams with GMs that do value defense generally don't have 9 gold glovers.

I agree, Harper is an athletic specimen with slightly above average speed.  I've also read that he has great baseball instincts so there is mo doubt in my mind that he could be a big league CF.  I dont think it will happen but I hope they at least give him a shot.  He could probably at least be as good ad werth in CF

I feel the Nats should get both Fielder and Coco Crisp.  Harper needs a full year at AAA Syracuse.

Also rickrickrick ankiel.

They aren't going to get rid of him just to get rid of him.

If they sign Fielder or have some other option for the outfield that moves Morse to 1B, why wouldn't they trade LaRoche for salary relief?  Why would they get rid of him just to get rid of him?  Should they keep him on the bench and not play him in order to...what exactly?

well, the non-penny pinching option would be to try to get something back in return. If you expect the acquiring team to eat the salary, it's going to be hard to find a taker at all, let alone a team willing to send anything back

If they can't get anything of value for him, which they probably can't given he hasn't played since early last year and hasn't played well in almost 2 years, then what?  Just sitting him on the bench won't increase his value to the point when he can be traded for something.  They might as well trade him for the dreaded 'salary relief' and use that money and throw it at Fielder/Zim/JZ or whoever else.

Morse is a below aveage LF and an above average 1B, IMO.
On that note does anyone buy the validity of these numbers or would you like to consider it an aberration?  I'm a bit torn on this myself.

Morse Slash Line as Primary LF (March 31st - May 20th, August 27th - September 27th) - .256/.302/.459 (.761 OPS in 225 PA)
LF (just March 31st - May 20th) - .260/.288/.354 (.642 OPS in 104 PA)
LF (just August 27th - September 27th) - .252/.314/.550 (.864 OPS in 121 PA)

Morse Slash Line as Primary 1B (May 21st - August 26) - .327/.371/.603 (.974 OPS in 350 PA)

I know that the slugging percentage was still nice when Morse was moved back to left field but average and OBP took a big hit.  Does anyone else think Morse may have a limited comfort level in left field that affects him at the plate?  I'm kinda leaning in that direction and, if that's the case, that has to be factored into whatever we do regarding Prince and even LaRoche for that matter.  If we know Morse will duplicate the 1B production from last year but only at 1B then we pretty much have to dump LaRoche at a minimum whether we sign Fielder or not.

No. I think he's a hitter that is tied to a very high BABIP that dips from time to time. That's the problem with hitters like Morse. If the hits aren't dropping, he's not going to be on base.

So you think the fact that it all happened while was in LF was just a coincidence?

Yes and it turns out he was responding to Heyman saying he wasn't going to start tweets with it's official and refer to trolling anything.  False alarm.  Ugh... make it happen already.  Sorry guys.
