Where did the thought that Ryan Zimmerman was going to become a first baseman come from?

Timmy talking about it:

One thing's for sure, Timmy knows the difference between "their" and "they're".  From the caption under the video...

Ray, I'm afraid I've got to challenge your mindfacts.

Average Nats attendance 2005 = 33,728.
August attendance                    = 37,471
September attendance              = 31,274
combined Aug Sept average      = 33,839

What was April, May, June, and July?

There was discussion, in the context of the Fielder issue, that at some point Zimmerman may no longer be able to play third base. Where do you move him? The only position that would make sense is first base. Can't move him there is Fielder is on the team.

Sorry, it was a pain to do just those two months, I can't do the rest right now.  I got the data from here though if you have the time to pull it together.

http://espn.go.com/mlb/team/schedule/_/name/wsh/year/2005/half/1/washington-nationals

You used to be able to pull up a nice schedule from I think the Ballparks of Baseball site, but the links aren't working.

Instead I pasted that screen you see in the link to Excel (using the "Text to columns" function which isn't very clean), deleted away games, and had to format line by line to put the attendance in the same column. Then computed the average from each month's remaining data.

I'd offer Fielder a 6 year contract with a higher average per year than Pujols but heavily weighted in the first three years...plus a 3 year opt out for him.

In other words, I want him to play really well in the first three years and then have him opt out.   I wouldn't want to be the team paying him when he's 31.

Ok, August was good, because we were in the thick of the race for the whole month, and in first place nearly the whole month. Nevermind that we were playing badly, things would heat up in September we all thought. When things didn't attendance tumbled.  31k was not good, given (as I recall) that we were steadily drawing close to 40k in early April, and for good parts of June and much of July.

I was curious as to where this even came up. Why wouldn't he be able to play third anymore?

32 is old age?

If Melvin Mora can play 3b in his upper 30's, I don't see why Zimmerman can't.

Arm.

I understand the thought but I'm more of a lets let speculation of injuries not get in the way of possible improvements kind of guy. If it happens, it happens. It would've been dumb to pass on Strasburg because people speculated he was going to need TJ surgery at some point. I remember that actually being a possible discussion topic.

Well, wrist, correct?  He has never thrown with the zip as he did before he had the injury.  Clearly something was lost there.

He also had the torn abdominal that also impacted his throwing.

There's also the he's not signing with a crappy team argument. Ms os and cubs are turrible.

Love the opt-out.  Gives Fielder high incentive to perform out of his skull in hopes of getting another shot at what he and Boras probably view as a very thin market today for his services.

Agreed. Allows him to opt out and run for an AL team where he can DH for his later years.

The only reason that signing Fielder seems remotely possible is due to the Boras factor. But I'll believe it when I see it. KR is correct about the MASN money being the source for the spending. It still bothers me that these deals are the ones the team make if the Lerners aren't willing to actually spend something. To date, their out of pocket expense has been nil, and it remains to be seen if they will actually start spending the team profits on an increased payroll. If they sign Prince, they need to continue with the other necessary spending to make it worthwhile.

Right now they are, but I don't think the Cubs will be for long, especially if they are willing to pay for a guy like Fielder.  I know they're trying to unlead Garza, but with Epstein on board, it won't be long til they're very competitive, I don't think.  Conversly, by signing here, there's a chance he could be on a competitive club, perhaps immediately.  Looks much more dire for O's and M's, though.

I think it was Boswell on why the Nats might reasonably pass on Fielder. Basic argument: LaRoche is OK if healthy; Morse is better at 1B than OF, and better than LaRoche. If LaRoche isn't tip-top, then Morse goes to 1B. If...someday...the team wants Zim off 3B then the only place would be 1B. Therefore, go with Morse for the next five years or more, and then Zimm. 1B is crowded.

I understand the other two arguments but the Zimmerman to 1b argument is just silly to me.

Moving Zim to 1st is a bogus argument.  He is 27 this year.  Sure he is fringing "injury-prone" but there is nothing to say that his footwork and fielding ability have really declined as a third baseman.  He is an elite player at a position with very little elite clientele.  I wouldn't even think about moving him to first until he was at least 33-34, which is six years away AT LEAST.  Also Look at Scott Rolen who is still playing GG caliber defense and can still hit at the age of 36.  I don't see a move to 1st for Zimmerman based on ability, only if Rendon should force him there because he can't play any other position.  I like Rendon at 2nd though and think he could easily turn into a guy who hits like Uggla and fields like Utley.  That is all speculation though and I think not signing Fielder is a huge mistake especially if you base it on "what if" prospects and "what if" payroll projections in the future.

Sign the guy, go to the postseason and watch the fan base come out in droves, well hopefully on that last one.  Bring on the best looking Murderers Row in years and top it off with an up and coming power pitching rotation and we at least have the stamp of being a true Washington Senators like team!

it's insanely silly. Last year, three of the top 5 3bs by fWAR were 'old guys'

Me too.  Seems like the answer would be to sign guys who can both field and hit rather than try to stack them up at first.
