yuck, Davey just referenced moving Morse back to LF. :?

Said he will probably even stick him out there later this year (maybe when Marrero comes up?)

It's the classic case of the GM obsessed with proving his signings were good. They've convinced themselves that LaRoche is God's gift to 1B defense. Morse is actually a talented infielder. LaRoche doesn't seem to have any use anywhere else on the field. He should be pumped and dumped for whatever we can get.

I believe that Morse to LF is more a function of giving Marrero time at 1B in September

(your miles may vary)

Agreed

Marrero deserves the call up.  He's having a very solid year in Syracuse and has been really hot the past two weeks posting on OPS of 1.190.

His stats are very similar to Yonder Alonso's AAA stats this year.  Maybe he lights it up and is part of a package in the offseason.

Now we know why Ryan had the homer, he's "feeding off of Morse", per Debbi.

Are you serious? I went out to walk my dogs and missed the post game.

It makes sense in September in some games to allow them to get a look at Marrero while keeping Morse in the lineup. The issue is next year when LaRoche is back. The "brain trust" seems wedded to the idea of making him the 1Bman again in a way that doesn't signal a desire to try and move him. And there are real question marks around what kind of player LaRoche will be. It's great to want to see what he can do, but this is a pattern where they are more likely to invest an inordinate amount of time in the hopes he'll return to form. Morse has found a natural home at 1B, which they would have known last season had they traded Dunn when they should have. I'd like to see if they are willing to stick with Morse in LF threw some rough spots or have a short leash and have double switched to death.

LaRoche is under contract for 2012 and right now has no trade value. Teams aren't going to trade for a guy coming off shoulder surgery. I imagine the Nationals are considering LaRoche as an option at 1B to see what they have, knowing they can (a) find a solid defensive 1B in LaRoche and a solid bat in LF in Morse; (b) prove to another team that LaRoche is healthy and deal him a month or so into the season; (c) LaRoche isn't back and they can then slide Morse back to 1B

That's what I would hope they would do. My fear is they have LaRoche entrenched at 1B for way too long regardless of performance. At some point, if the pump and dump doesn't yield any offers, you hope they are willing to simply deal with the player as an expensive role player. But that hasn't been the history. And that's what scares me.

I'm just as concerned with the idea that Morse has a chronically bad knee.  I think there's less stress on it at 1B than all the running in the outfield.  I'd rather see him stick with 1B.

Since we've now heard the excuse that LaRoche "always starts slow", let him start slow for some other losing team.  I want to win, not be 10 games under 500 to pamper some overpaid slow starter.

Comparative dates on which the Nationals notched their 58th win, each season:

2005 - 4th August (108th match of season)
2011 - 16th August (120th match)
2007 - 23rd August (128th match)
2006 - 2nd September (135th match)
2010 - 4th September (136th match)
2008 - 16th September (151st match)
2009 - 3rd October (161st match)

---

Not a bad group in the house last night for a non-promo Tuesday (announced attendance 23,888 - looked about right).
