Before OBP was cool, he had 3 straight years over .391, .401, and .389 at the start of his career in 1975 - 77.  Career OPS+ of 118.  Between age 25 and 31, he was a 3 time all star for Cinci.  By the time he hit NYY at age 32, he was in his league average phase of his career, with only 2 of his last 9 years above his career OPS+.  Stole 34 bases in 1976, with a .336 / .401 / .450 line.  Negative defender by total zone all but two years.   I think his 1976 at a young age made him look like something special, and he was just good enough for NYY to think he was worth going after.
This is why I love this site. Learned a lot there. Thanks.

My only surprise was the 34 SB in 1976. My recollection of him was later in his career, I think, when he was really slow. And he played until 40 or so. He and Jr. were on the same team when he was 39, I think. Of course, this is all from memory. I am way too lazy to look anything up.:~)

My main memory of Ken Griffey is thinking, "oh, no, still more" after a team I was rooting for got past Joe Morgan, Pete Rose, Tony Perez, and Johnny Bench, and still there was this young guy named "Griffey" who would smash a line-drive into a gap. Ah, right...almost forgot George Foster.

So far, Norris is the only National to have been named to the Futures Game on Saturday.

Sal Fasano would be proud, or Marc Hulett would be ashamed.

harper, norris, walters are all starting tonight.  Harper and Walters have hits in their first ABs.  Norris with a sacrifice.

Harper just hit a 2-run bomb.  He is now 2-2 tonight and his average is .300.

if he dominates the AFL and has a strong spring, it will be very difficult to keep him off the club.  Maybe we'll be able to deal LaRoche, move Morse to 1B and sign Crisp?

Needs more defensive seasoning.  Another year in the minors I'd think,  2013 or maybe a Sept 2012 callup.
