I think I would platoon Bixler and Ankiel...which Davey is now doing. Nobody out there looks like Curtis Granderson. There just aren't many CFs around, and not many disciplined leadoff hitters either.

Across the team, if either Desmond or Espinosa hit .285, the Nats would be much stronger. The Nats have a boat anchor in the middle of the lineup: Ramos (.250), Desmond & Espinosa (.230), Ankiel (settling toward .235) & Bixler (improving toward .235).

He's basically league average, interestingly enough.

 I like this idea.

Upton

2009 - .241/.313/.373/.686
2010 - .237/.322/.424/.745
2011 - .223/.303/.387/.691

Not looking very good.

His crap OBP fits right in with the Nats, though.
BABIP's a b!tch.

2009 - .310
2010 - .304
2011 - .272
Career - .324

Hmmmm .... basically, when he makes contact he's not a terrible hitter.

Which would be fine
Except for that 150 strikeouts a season he tends to have.

I'd say the average and OBP decline is not an indication he's going down hill.  His OBP is driven by his average, and that is driven by his BABIP. There's no decline in slugging.  His ISO is halfway between 2009 and 2010, he's on track to have his second best home run year, his strikeout and walk rate is pretty steady over this period.  He's had bad luck on batted balls, but his skills make him a .240 / .315 / .400 hitter with a 75% success rate in steals in his last 250 attempts. That's not a top of the order hitter, but I could deal with a hitter like that batting 6th.  Add in slightly above average defense, and he's an average CF.  Nothing to break the bank for, nothing to fork over much talent for.

Right now he's making almost five million. I gotta assume that with arbitration next year, he'll be making more.

It would be a surprise, but he probably should be nontendered with Guyer and the outfield spare parts they have.  For about $6MM, they could bring in a DH and go with Guyer or a

along with Jennings and Joyce.  There's also Zobrist if they can find an MI or two they are happy with.

I can see him being non-tendered.  Cameron Maybin was a nice little comeback story for the Padres.  Maybe Upton can do the same here.

How he managed to make it to GM is beyond me.
