Singleton looks like a good prospect but what's so great about Cosart?  Here is his career thus far - http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker&utm_campaign=Linker&id=cosart001jar

And Singleton is still probably 3 years away if he makes it at all.
He's big. He's young. He's got a mid 90s fastball with movement and a really good 11-5 curve. Oh and he's only 21

If the deal Pence, they're in fire sale mode. We should get Bourn. I'd rather give up prospects than young, proven players.

I think his future could be a super utility guy if he can handle the defense. If we are getting peanuts back, might as well hang onto him. I'd really see major shakeups with this team but I hate trades if overall we lose value.

Quote
4.     Jarred Cosart, rhp   Born: May 25, 1990 • B-T: R-R • Ht: 6-3 • Wt: 180
Drafted: HS—League City, Texas, 2008 (38th round) • Signed by: Steve Cohen
Jarred CosartBackground: Negotiations between Cosart's father Joe and Phillies brass went down to the wire during an American Legion game that ended less than an hour before the 2008 signing deadline, with the team prying Cosart away from a Missouri commitment for a $550,000 bonus in the 38th round. A talented two-way player, he broke Clear Creek (Texas) High's batting average record (.506) previously set by Jay Buhner. Shoulder and back pain delayed his pro debut in 2009, and a tender elbow shut him down in mid-2010 and kept him out of the Futures Game.

Scouting Report: Cosart is tall and lean, and scouts regard his arm as one of the most electric in the minor leagues. His fastball sits at 94-98 mph, usually at the top end of that range, with good life. His 77-79 mph curveball is a solid-average pitch, while his low-80s changeup is a work in progress. His command is advanced for his age and lively stuff. The biggest concern with Cosart is his health, though his arm action and delivery raise no red flags. His maturity and work ethic also have been called into question.

The Future: Cosart pitched without pain in instructional league and should be able to begin the 2011 season in high Class A. He has the potential to become a No. 1 starter or closer—if he can stay healthy.

Baseball America on Cosart this spring

Cards looking for a SS.  Desmond out of tonight's game...
Desmond started.

I'd be shocked if we got anything for Desmond. They lost their chance to get him when they dealt Rasmus for Edwin Jackson.

Something has to get done. This team is sinking fast and they are in desperate need of a life preserver.

At least the Phillies are cleaning out their farm system.  Their crash to Earth should be glorious.

We've got a young guy with great stuff and mediocre results as a potential future closer on the ML squad.  Does he plus a 19 year old = Hunter Pence?  And HRod doesn't have any apparent health issues.

I think the Astros got burned yet again.  They should have held out for Dominic Brown.  And frankly, that's a trade I would make if I'm the Phillies.

Surprised the Astros didn't get Brown. Pretty good trade for both teams, though.

Yep. Singleton is their top prospect (aside from Dom Brown, who hasn't shown anything yet) and Cosart is their #2 pitching prospect.

They've mortgaged the upper level of their farm and now they are dipping into that core of A players that was supposed to be their "next wave".

It's not a bad move for the Phillies, or anything. But it definitely hurts their farm.

I'll gladly slam back into Earth with another ring or two :-)

Truth.

2 pathetic AB's.  6 pitches, 2 k's.  Probably just wishful thinking that we could trade him.

Not thrilled we gave up something from our "Baby Aces" group - but frankly, if it gets us another ring - i can deal with it. The Phillies farm system is MUCH deeper than given credit for.

Frankly - I think Houston got the better of this deal. Ed Wade made a good move here....for once.

But Pence is a popular player in Houston - would have helped that fanbase to get at least one major league ready player.

One of those guys is very young and the other is getting mediocre results despite good stuff and has some injury concerns.  Even if one pans out, the likelihood of them being as good as Pence is pretty remote.

Just saw the video of Pence running off the field after getting traded. Must've been an odd feeling.

PatsNats28 pointed out that he's 23rd in baseball in WAR - I'd say he's pretty good.  Plus, I htink he only gets better in that Philly lineup.

Yeah the lineup definitely helps him. Don't get me wrong - I am by no means upset with the deal - but for ONCE, Ed Wade didn't get bent over entirely.
