2011 Trade Watch (was trade deadline watch)
« on: July 25, 2011, 02:39:12 pm »
There are a bunch of different threads on various rumored deals, so I thought I'd create one for the next few days.

Anyway, to kick-off:

Denard Span High On Nationals' List
By Tim Dierkes [July 25 at 1:30pm CST]
Twins center fielder Denard Span is high on the Nationals' list of targets, reports Amanda Comak of the Washington Times.  Span would fit the team's desire for a controllable center fielder/leadoff hitter, assuming there are no ill effects from a concussion suffered in June.

Span, 27, is hitting .294/.361/.385 on the season in 255 plate appearances.  His center field defense has been a plus in recent years, according to UZR.  His team-friendly contract has less than $15MM remaining through 2014, plus a club option for '15.  It's not known whether the Twins consider Span expendable; Ben Revere has a .249/.287/.284 line filling in.  The asking price would surely be significant.

Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports first mentioned Span as a potential Nats target earlier this month, along with B.J. Upton, Michael Bourn, and Colby Rasmus.

Any of the people we want are going to cost a lot. Upton is probably last on my list of Span, Rasmus and Bourn, but they're all good CFers. Any of them would be an upgrade.

Nats will draw the line on what they offer for BJ Upton.

I have no idea what that means.

I think it means that we won't trade for Edwin Jackson and use him to get Upton.

Rosenthal just tweeted that we are talking to Twins about Span and the rumor is they want Desmond and a reliever or some combo of relievers.

No chance we give them Desmond and Clip for Span is there?

I'd love Span, though.

B.J. Upton, long a target of the Nationals, is not the team’s only focus in its search for a center fielder.

The Nats also have talked to the Twins about a trade for Denard Span, according to major-league sources.

The Twins possibly could address two needs in such a deal – acquiring a shortstop, Ian Desmond, and a late-inning reliever.

The Nats are unwilling to trade closer Drew Storen and reluctant to trade All-Star setup man Tyler Clippard, sources say.

However, the Twins likely would want better than a right-hander such as Todd Coffey or Henry Rodriguez in a package for Span.

In addition to Upton and Span, the Nats also are looking at the Cardinals’ Colby Rasmus and Astros’ Michael Bourn sources say.

The team considers Desmond a player with promise, but his .584 OPS is the lowest in the National League. Some club officials want to move second baseman Danny Espinosa to short and promote Steve Lombardozzi to second.

Span, 27, is under a club-friendly contract – he is earning $1 million this season, $3 million next season, $4.75 in 2013 and $6.75 million in ’14 with a $9 million club option for ’15.

The concern with Span is that he has not played since June 6 due to a concussion. He currently is on a rehabilitation assignment.

That's a joke right?

They'd give up Span for Desmond and Coffey... and Rizzo hasn't said yes yet?!?

So, just push them around like we did in the Ramos trade and tell them they're getting Desmond and Coffey and they'll sit there and like it.

If were able to grab Span for Coffey and Desmond, Rizzo is the man.

Can't imagine Clippard and Desmond, unless something else comes back our way.

No, they said they'd likely want better than Coffey or HRod. If they are offering him for Desmond and Coffey, that would be done by now.

Yeah, if we're giving them Clip, we need Span and a prospect or something.

Span is under control through 2015.

That'd be an awesome get for the Nats.

Rosenthal says the nats are not going to give up storen and also reluctant to trade clippard, will consider coffey and h-rod..
There is still interest for Bourn, Rasmus, and Upton.

Worth reading, even if it's Jimbo. Few have the perspective that he does from his years as a GM.

I'd trade Desmond and Clippard for Span. I might push them for Luke Hughes or some extra piece back, just because I want to extract a bit more for the non-Coffey package.  I'd also think of offering Coffey, Desmond, and Bally (and maybe Stammen too)  and see if the quantity overcomes some of the quality.

Here it stinks that Burnett is having such an awwful season.  He'd be the ideal "less than Clippard, more than Coffey" veteran piece if he were performing like last year or if this was April.

I actually think he will end up surprising folks with how close he returns to form.
