Blargh

If this game was a girl and the Nats were in competition with the Sox for getting laid, they were able to win her over with the tequila shot

WE freaking lapped the previous longest game thread.

Pretty sure this thread is longer than any other two gameday threads combined, ever.

EVER.

Way to step up and dominate tonight, houston.

Now y'all know. I am the Jose Goddamn Bautista of Gameday Threads.

...and to think it started with this:

Oh, crap, I started this gameday thread?

If this game was a girl and the Nats were in competition with the Sox for getting laid, they were able to win her over with the tequila shot in the top of the 14th. It was an interesting back and forth of drinks bought (I mean we all know this girl is a major tease but she is 15/10 rated by Ebert and Roeper). So with the successful game that the Nats had, they deserve to have the night of their life.

Pretty sure you mean 14/9

Comparative dates on which the Nationals notched their 39th win, each season:

2005 - 15th June (66th match of season)
2011 - 24th June (76th match)
2010 - 9th July (87th match)
2006 - 16th July (93rd match)
2007 - 18th July (94th match)
2008 - 1st August (109th match)
2009 - 8th August (111th match)

What on earth was going on with that 2005 team?  They weren't nearly as good as this year's team.

Well, I wasn't even a baseball fan at the time, so I guess that's accurate.  But looking at the lineup, run differential, etc., that team was the textbook definition of smoke and mirrors.

2005 was special. Cherry popping season for the next generation of D.C. baseball. You missed out. :poke:

That said, we should have buried that .500 record long ago. Get cracking Nationals. :whip:

A lot of teams are more talented now.

The reason why the 2011 edition hasn't been able to gain ground on the Overachievers of '05 is that the '05 edition went 20-6 in June (best single-month record in Nats history, if I recall aright)...ironically that team's 39th win (away to Angels) also made them winners in 12 of their last 13, just like last night's win did for the current edition. The '05 Overachievers would continue strongly through 3rd July when they would be 50-31...it was from the Fourth of July onward (start of a series in which they dropped 3 of 4 at home to the Mets) that they would lose the plot. Even if today's Nats continue as hot as they've been, they're not going to seriously gain ground on the Overachievers till the win totals hit the low 50's.

Conversely, the reason the '08 edition joined the '09 train-wreck at the bottom is that their 39th win (home over Reds) snapped a nine-match losing streak.

So, all in good time...the current edition just needs to keep winning.

I'm just razzing you. They won all of their 1 run games in the first half and then lost them all in the second half. They also DESTROYED the AL West.

I know OldChelsea. I was there.

It was a hell of a start. The later half was :hang: and a sign of the losing to come. :(

I didn't really bother. Just checked every five or so to see if people were actually talking about the game. Mostly it seemed like they were. I have NO idea how they could have written 86 pages of posts just about the ballgame, unless there were like 200 people watching last night. Thought for sure I'd find a pocket of 10 pages where Stras37 flamed all the Riggleman haters.

Fourteen innings on a Friday night away match, coupled with the first full day after the Riggleman bombshell, can do that....

Got to educate the young'uns as to the way things were...we're taking on new fans* these days (only one home fixture in June with less than 20k attendance).

I do wish someone would take another shot at a 2005 documentary video. The one they came out with was weak tea. Only watchable due to homer tendencies where the Nationals are concerned.
