2005 was special. Cherry popping season for the next generation of D.C. baseball. You missed out.
That said, we should have buried that .500 record long ago. Get cracking Nationals.
The reason why the 2011 edition hasn't been able to gain ground on the Overachievers of '05 is that the '05 edition went 20-6 in June (best single-month record in Nats history, if I recall aright)...ironically that team's 39th win (away to Angels) also made them winners in 12 of their last 13, just like last night's win did for the current edition. The '05 Overachievers would continue strongly through 3rd July when they would be 50-31...it was from the Fourth of July onward (start of a series in which they dropped 3 of 4 at home to the Mets) that they would lose the plot. Even if today's Nats continue as hot as they've been, they're not going to seriously gain ground on the Overachievers till the win totals hit the low 50's.
Conversely, the reason the '08 edition joined the '09 train-wreck at the bottom is that
their 39th win (home over Reds) snapped a nine-match losing streak.
So, all in good time...the current edition just needs to keep winning.
